The FBI Announces the Federal Arrest of Michael Zacharias
The Cleveland Division of the FBI—Lima Resident Agency, and the United States Attorney’s Office—Northern District of Ohio, announce the federal arrest of Michael Zacharias, age 53, of Findlay, Ohio.
Zacharias has been federally charged with coercion and enticement, sex trafficking of a minor, and sex trafficking of an adult by force, fraud, or coercion. Zacharias was taken into custody today, August 18, 2020, without incident at his residence by members of the Northwest Ohio Child Exploitation and Human Trafficking Task Force.
According to the complaint, investigators, at this time, are aware Zacharias has engaged in sexual conduct with minors since the late 1990’s.
The FBI is encouraging anyone that has had contact with Michael Zacharias where they may have been “groomed” for possible future sexual purposes, they were inappropriately touched, or they were sexually assaulted by Michael Zacharias to contact the FBI at (216) 622-6842.
All information will be strictly confidential.

FINDLAY, Ohio — The Cleveland Division of the FBI and the United States Attorney's Office on Tuesday announced the federal arrest of 53-year-old Father Michael Zacharias in Findlay. He was immediately placed on leave by the Diocese of Toledo, with Bishop Daniel Thomas expressing his shock and revulsion at the allegations of sexual misconduct against the priest.
Zacharias, a priest at St. Michael the Archangel Parish, is charged with sex trafficking of a minor, sex trafficking of an adult by force, fraud or coercion, and coercion or enticement.
Officials say Zacharias was taken into custody on Tuesday at his residence without incident by members of the Northwest Ohio Child Exploitation and Human Trafficking Task Force.
It appears Zacharias celebrated daily Mass shortly before he was arrested.
According to the complaint, investigators are aware that Zacharias has engaged in sexual conduct with minors since the late 1990s. The Diocese said he was ordained a priest in 2002 and these are the first such allegations to be raised against him.
FBI Agent Eric Smith said Zacharias served at other parishes during his time as a priest, including St. Catherine's in west Toledo.
The federal court documents were released and can be read full below. However, as a warning, they feature graphic content detailing explicit situations that may be disturbing for some readers.

A statement from Bishop Thomas said, "I am profoundly shocked and grieved to learn of these charges against one of our priests. The Church cannot and will not tolerate any such behavior and takes any sexual abuse or misconduct on the part of a cleric with the utmost seriousness. As we await the outcome of the criminal investigation, our prayers go out to anyone affected by this situation."
In accordance with the Policy for the Protection of Minors and Young People, while on administrative leave, Father Zacharias cannot exercise public priestly ministry, administer any of the Sacraments, wear clerical attire or present himself as a priest. Administrative leave is a precautionary measure while an allegation is being investigated.

Washington — The U.S. Senate on Tuesday approved the nomination of Michigan businessman John Rakolta Jr. to be U.S. ambassador to the United Arab Emirates.
With the 63-30 vote, Rakolta is set to become the first political appointee to serve in the post, which has traditionally been filled by career foreign-service officers.
Michigan U.S. Sens. Debbie Stabenow and Gary Peters voted in favor of Rakolta's selection, along with nine other Democratic senators plus Sen. Angus King, an independent from Maine.
Rakolta is CEO and chairman of the Detroit-based Walbridge, an international construction and engineering company that has done major projects in the UAE.
At his confirmation hearing this summer, he pledged not to do any more business in the Middle East going forward. "We will not be going back to doing business there," he said.
Utah Sen. Mitt Romney, a Michigan native, on Tuesday praised Rakolta's business success but also his service to the Detroit community, which includes co-chairing a coalition of business, civic, education and faith leaders addressed the city's public school system ills.
Rakolta served as finance chairman of Romney’s two presidential campaigns in 2008 and 2012.
"Of course, my friends on the other side of the aisle are dutiful in their examination of any possible flaw," said Romney, who has known Rakolta personally for 30 years.
"I'm convinced that the concerns they may have raised are not well-founded, and he is in fact entirely qualified and appropriately nominated to this important position."

President Donald Trump nominated Rakolta in March 2018 for the position, which has been vacant for 18 months.
Rakolta was a top donor to Trump's 2017 inauguration, giving $250,000. His family members contributed over $275,000 to Trump's 2016 campaign funds.
Rakolta is also related by marriage to Ronna Romney McDaniel, who chairs the Republican National Committee and who chaired the Michigan GOP when Trump was elected. Rakolta’s wife and McDaniel's mother are sisters.

Instead of going after the child welfare system for snatching kids and killing her child, she decides to go after the law to have muslim kids placed in muslim foster care.
That is religious discrimination.
Her kids grew up to be christian and do not want much to do with her.
I do not believe she even bothered to sue the State of Michigan, let alone go to the FBI, but, instead, she opted out for the money, faith based, that is.
So now, she has a fancy foster care operation complete with faith based donations and money laundering to be the first muslim foster care facility.
Would that mean that non-muslim children would be turned away?
Would that mean that she will start trafficking tiny humans from muslim countries?
That would be an issue of forced migration, a war crime.
Would be just like St. Vincent and Bethany Christian, who are suing Michigan, turning away same sex adoption couples, except they would turn away non-muslims?
That would be religious segregation.

Dearborn – The story of Rehab Amer and her husband Ahmad’s struggle to keep their children is known to many. After decades of legal battles, and eventual successes bringing the Amer Law to the state of Michigan in 2010, Amer and her community partners want to inject hope and self-determination into families across the nation.
Rehab Amer has been busy working towards building a strong non-profit organization that protects children and empowers parents.

According to the organization’s website, AMER, or American Muslim Empowerment Resources, will provide, “services and preventative resources, family judicial advocacy and developing of legislative initiatives for children and families in need.”
The AANews met with Amer and board member Hussein Siblini at New Yasmeen Bakery last week to discuss their important work of keeping families united and preventing children from being put into the foster care system where they could go through unchecked abuse or trauma.
Amer’s work, like the law she helped enact, seeks to bring cultural and religious sensitivity back into common sense childcare decisions made by the state and local authorities. More importantly, she has been actively working to advocate for families and ensure that Amer law is observed in judicial proceedings in foster care cases.
“I am a nurse and I left my job after hearing of the overwhelming need, from the community and from outside of it, for someone to be there for them during a potential child separation procedure,” Amer said.
“Our work is even more important when it comes to refugees, who may not speak the language,” she added. “If such a family comes (to this country) with seven or eight children and just one of them gets involved in the protective services system, the state will automatically want to remove all other children as well.”
Amer and her colleagues have a variety of strategies in place to prevent such summary removals and separations. The first of these is seeking out potentially risky family environments, especially in immigrant and refugee homes where cultural norms can be misinterpreted by state authorities as hazardous for children.
“There is a cultural barrier when it comes to these cases,” Siblini said. “A lack of knowledge on the part of Child Protective Services of cultural practices can lead to unfair judgments and child care assessments.”
Amer has personally intervened in several such cases and has helped bring welfare services and much needed resources to families who have had children taken from them, so that they do not face the same threat with the rest of their children.
In cases where children are to be put into foster care, Amer advocates for the next of kin or Muslim foster parents to take the child, following the Amer law.
“I currently have a 6-year-old in my care,” she added. “The importance of having a safe and fit family for a child can make a tremendous difference in his or her emotional life.”
Reflecting on her work, Amer noted that the legal procedure in these cases is often rushed.
“In my interventions I make sure the interpreter to refugee parents is communicating information accurately,” she said. “In some instances, we found that case workers did not inform the court that the family had relatives willing to take care of the child. I make sure to bring these relatives to court so that the judge can see the entire picture.”
Last February, U.S. Rep. Debbie Dingell (D-Dearborn) introduced HR 4990, the Rehab and Ahmed Amer Foster Care Improvement Act of 2018. The legislation would require state foster care programs nationwide to ensure children are prioritized for placement with their relatives and puts additional requirements in place for a fairer decision-making process when an agency places a child.
Additionally, the legislation would require states to establish procedures that would allow any of the parties who receive notice of the placement decision to request, within five days after receipt of the notice, documentation explaining the reasons for the state’s decision.
It would also allow the child’s attorney to petition the court to review the decision and require that the court commence a review within seven days after receipt of the petition.
“This legislation needs nationwide support to pass,” Amer said. “I am urging the community to reach out to their state representatives and request their support by cosponsoring the bill with Congresswoman Dingell.”
The AMER Foundation is currently in the process of getting licensed to become an approved foster care agency. Amer also plans to grow the non-profit to expand its advocacy operations nationwide.
“We need the assistance and support of our community in order to make this vision a reality,” she said. “I would ask all parents, Muslim or not, to look into their hearts and see that the child’s best interest is to keep them close to their loved ones. I invite others to advocate with me in court, provide much needed resources to refugee parents and families and donate to the AMER Foundations mission to empower families.”
