Israel's health minister gets coronavirus; top officials isolate

Coronavirus has forced more top Israeli officials into isolation after the country's health minister, who has had frequent contact with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, tested positive, the health ministry said on Thursday.

Israeli Health Minister Yaakov Litzman and his wife, who also contracted the virus, are in isolation but said they feel well and are being treated, a ministry statement said.

Shortly after the announcement, the prime minister's office said Netanyahu returned to self-quarantine because of his contact with Litzman.

Netanyahu had previously been in isolation after a top aide tested positive for the virus. Netanyahu has tested negative.

The Israeli daily Haaretz reported the head of Israel's Mossad spy agency and the National Security Council were asked to self-quarantine because of their interactions with Litzman.

The health ministry's director and Litzman's staff also self-quarantined, and the ministry said requests to enter isolation will be sent to those who came in contact with the minister in the past two weeks.

Israel has gone into near-lockdown to try to contain the outbreak. The country has reported more than 6,200 confirmed cases and 31 people have died from COVID-19, the illness caused by the virus.

Israel's large, insular ultra-Orthodox community, of which Litzman is a member, has been particularly hit hard by infections. In the early phases of the outbreak, some rabbis pushed back or ignored government-mandated movement restrictions, but resistance appears to have diminished.

On Wednesday, Netanyahu ordered a police cordon around the largely ultra-Orthodox city of Bnei Brak, east of Tel Aviv, to limit movement to and from the city. Bnei Brak has the second-highest number of coronavirus cases in Israel.

For most people, the coronavirus causes mild or moderate symptoms, such as fever and cough. But for others, especially older adults and people with existing health problems, the virus can cause severe symptoms like pneumonia or death.

Like virtually all long-serving elected officials that represent inner cities, they leave their constituencies in utter shambles and their bank accounts flush with cash.

King said on her radio program last month that such officials shouldn’t just “pay with their jobs” but should also “pay with their lives.”  "hanging from a noose right in front of the U.S. Capitol Building."

King specifically suggested hanging members of the Congressional Black Caucus, saying “their districts are all dumb clucks because these dumb clucks wouldn’t be electing these people if they knew better.”
I shall assume that I am a dumb cluck, that is until Andrea is exonerated from being implicated in a plausible death wish conspiracy of my Sweetie, with an opportunity to bear witness.

“How do people like this get to represent us in Congress?” she asked. “Because there are stupid people out there in those congressional districts who are so ignorant it’s dangerous…. Stupid, stupid people. Our lives are on the line and all they can think of is skin color. All of us will turn black if we end up in a cage on fire.”

We should also ask Andrea to tell us everything she knows about Detroit, as she seems to be a subject matter expert on how and why the Bankruptcy came to happen.

I bet Andrea knows about the Detroit Land Bank Authority, too.

Israeli PM Netanyahu indicted on charges of bribery, fraud and breach of trust

Netanyahu has previously denied any wrongdoing and has said he is the victim of a politically orchestrated "witch-hunt" by the media and the left.

Israel’s Attorney General Avichai Mandelblit announced Thursday that he was indicting Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on charges of bribery, and fraud and breach of trust.

Netanyahu has previously denied any wrongdoing and has said he is the victim of a politically orchestrated "witch-hunt" by the media and the left.

It comes while Netanyahu is serving as Israel's caretaker prime minister after he failed to cobble together a government last month.

Netanyahu had hoped to pass legislation that would prevent him from being indicted but has been unable to do so because he failed to form Israel’s next government following the Sept. 17 election.

The caretaker prime minister still has the option to ask the Israeli Parliament for immunity. But this request would need to be approved by a special committee that has not been established due to ongoing political deadlock.

Netanyahu’s chief political rival Benny Gantz announced Wednesday that he had also failed to form a government, prolonging the country’s political uncertainty and raising the prospect of Israel holding its third national election in a year.

There are now 21 days in which any member of Parliament can become prime minister if they muster the 61 signatures needed to achieve a majority in the Knesset. If that does not happen Israel will return to the polls.

In which case, Netanyahu’s indictment potentially poses a new legal problem.

If he wins the next election, it will be the first time a candidate for government is under indictment, raising the question as to whether President Reuven Rivlin can give Netanyahu the mandate to form the next government.

See, the way the letter is written, it leaves one with the idea that if Jerusalem taxes the lands of the churches, that could be open to interpretation which would include all the lands owned by the these churches, recognized by the Government of Israel, to bear arms, and conduct business, because we are dealing with taxes, which means you can ask what kind of taxes are to be levied, like personal, corporate, tragedy of the commons, inheritance....oh, there are so many different ways to verify stuff in the public record.

West Michigan priest allegedly held teen against his will, wrapped him in plastic

In 2013, a couple of concerned Otsego parents asked their priest, Father Brian Stanley, to counsel their son.

Instead, authorities said, he bound the teenage boy with plastic wrap and held him against his will.

The Attorney General's office said Stanley coerced the boy into following him into the janitor's room, where he immobilized him with plastic wrap and used masking tape to cover his eyes and mouth.

He then left the young man alone for an hour in the janitor's room of their Otsego church, St. Margaret’s parish, officials said.

Now, six years later, Stanley was arrested by special agents from the Attorney General's office, who believes his conduct was an ongoing, sexually motivated crime.

He is being charged with one count of false imprisonment, facing up to 15 years in prison and an obligatory registration as a sex offender. His bail was set at $100,000.

The Diocese of Kalamazoo says it reported multiple allegations regarding Stanley to the authorities, including the one in 2013 and another in 2017.

The diocese says it reached out to Child Protective Services and the Otsego Police Department in 2013, when it learned about the incident involving the young boy, but the police never filed any charges.

It placed Stanley on administrative leave both times.

“We remain steadfast in our commitment to promote greater protection and safeguards of all people, particularly for children and vulnerable adults. We adhere to the National 2002 Charter for the Protection of Young People, which guides all that we do," said the Diocese in a statement to the Free Press.

Attorney General Dana Nessel's office seized files from seven Michigan dioceses, including the Diocese of Kalamazoo, in October 2018.

Officials said it was apparent from records that Stanley had been using plastic wrap and tape in similar behavior for many decades.

“This is about taking on large-scale institutions that turn a blind eye to victims and making certain we hold them accountable – that includes unapologetically pursuing any and all individuals who abuse their power to victimize our residents,” said Nessel.

An attorney for Stanley could not immediately be reached for comment.

Trump thanks Blackburn for blocking requirement to notify FBI when foreign nations offer election aid

U.S. Sen. Marsha Blackburn blocked a bill from Sen. Mark Warner that would require campaigns to report foreign offers of assistance to the FBI.

The bill from Warner, D-Va., known as the Foreign Influence Reporting in Elections Act, required unanimous consent in order to move forward, meaning that Blackburn's decision to object stopped the legislation in its tracks.

"I objected to the unanimous consent proposal presented on the floor because it was a blatant political stunt," Blackburn said in a news release Thursday. "My colleagues on the left tried to rush this legislation through the Senate without giving it a chance for the careful consideration and debate needed to address such an important issue. Of course action needs to be taken to protect the integrity of our elections, but let’s do this the right way."

President Donald Trump late Friday afternoon thanked Blackburn for blocking the bill and "fighting obstructionist Democrats."

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., slammed Blackburn on Twitter after the failure of the legislation, referring to the objection as "a new low" and "outrageous."

On the Senate floor, Schumer called it "disgraceful" that Republicans would "cower before this president when they know that the things he does severely damage democracy."

REP. CONYERS: NETANYAHU ADDRESS IS TROUBLESOME TIMING AND POOR PROTOCOL

Washington, D.C. – Congressman John Conyers, Jr. (MI-13) released the following statement regarding today’s address to a joint session of Congress by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu:

“My decision not to attend the address by Prime Minister Netanyahu is based not on policy differences but rather on protocol.  Speaker Boehner extended the invitation without consulting President Obama or bipartisan Congressional leadership.  The speech was scheduled just in advance of a highly-contested election in Israel in which Prime Minister Netanyahu is competing and during highly-sensitive international negotiations regarding Iran. In short, the address was poorly-timed and inappropriately executed. 

“I remain a strong supporter of the US-Israel relationship and a longtime advocate for a two-state settlement that finally allows Israelis and Palestinians to live in peace.  Yet the timing and circumstances surrounding this address suggest that it has more to do with advancing a narrow political agenda than strengthening the US-Israel bilateral relationship. 

“Given the Presidential prerogative in matters of foreign affairs, it is inappropriate and unprecedented for Congress to host a foreign leader for a speech without coordinating with the White House.  Speaker Boehner not only failed to coordinate with the White House but failed to inform President Obama of the invitation. 

‘The proximity of the speech to Israeli elections is also deeply troubling.  While use of videos of House floor activity in political campaign advertisements is prohibited, Prime Minister Netanyahu used clips of a prior speech to Congress to great effect in paid advertisements during his 2013 re-election campaign.  Hosting Prime Minister Netanyahu again for an address before a joint session of Congress just weeks before another election invites accusations of meddling in an overseas vote. 

Finally, the use of the House Floor as a platform to argue against the comprehensive nuclear agreement currently being negotiated between Iran and a group of nations including the United States, Russia, China, France, the United Kingdom and Germany could undermine the very national interests that US diplomats are working hard to advance. 

“I would be delighted and honored to attend a speech by the Prime Minister of Israel, one of our nation’s most important allies, on the House floor.  However, the speech must be appropriately timed and must respect the appropriate protocol.”
