Pelosi Statement on Martin Luther King, Jr. Day
JANUARY 21, 2019
San Francisco – Speaker Nancy Pelosi released the following statement in recognition of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, which is observed annually as a national day of service on the third Monday of January in honor of the civil rights leader’s birthday on January 15, 1929:
“Ninety years after Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s birth, we draw inspiration from his life of service and his legacy of committed activism in the fight for opportunity, equality and justice for all Americans. Dr. King’s enduring example of unwavering faith and vision, and his clarion voice of moral righteousness strengthen and empower us all.
“Today, half a century after Dr. King’s tragic murder, we have made important progress on the long, treacherous road toward social and economic justice. Yet, we are still combatting the forces of discrimination and hate that seek to undermine our freedom and our democracy. Too many Americans in too many places continue to face an unprecedented assault on their sacred right to be heard at the ballot box, to access quality, affordable health care, and to live free from attacks on their financial security. Dr. King’s profound belief in the dignity and worth of every person moves us to heed his call to ‘make justice a reality for all of God’s children.’
“Democrats join with Americans from every walk of life to rise to meet the urgency of our time. Today, and every day, we pay tribute to Dr. King, those who fought by his side, and those who followed in his footsteps by renewing our commitment to complete the work he started, strengthening the cause of freedom, and defending the promise of progress for all Americans.”
