(WASHINGTON) – Committee on Homeland Security Chairman Bennie G. Thompson (D-MS) and Ranking Member Rep. Mike Rogers (R-AL) issued a subpoena to Jim Watkins, the owner of the website 8chan, for testimony related to the Committee’s ongoing oversight work on countering extremist content on social media platforms.  A copy of the subpoena can be found here. 

Chairman Thompson and Ranking Member Rogers released the following joint statement on the subpoena:

“Today the Committee on Homeland Security issued a subpoena to Jim Watkins, the owner of the website 8chan. In recent years, violent extremist content has proliferated on both large and small social media platforms. At least three acts of deadly white supremacist extremist violence have been linked to 8chan in the last six months. We have questions on what is being done to counter this trend so we can be sure it is being properly addressed. Receiving testimony from Mr. Watkins is critical to our oversight on this matter.”

Joint Statement From Attorney General Sessions, FBI Director Wray, DNI Coats, CIA Director Pompeo, And NSA Director Rogers On FISA Section 702 Reauthorization

Reauthorizing Section 702 before it expires is vital to keeping the nation safe. Let us be clear: if Congress fails to act, vital intelligence collection on international terrorists and other foreign adversaries will be lost. The country will be less secure.

There is no substitute for Section 702. If Congress fails to reauthorize this authority, the Intelligence Community will lose valuable foreign intelligence information, and the resulting intelligence gaps will make it easier for terrorists, weapons proliferators, malicious cyber actors, and other foreign adversaries to plan attacks against our citizens and allies without detection. Section 702 has been instrumental in preventing attacks on the homeland and removing terrorists from the battlefield.

To be clear – Congress is not required to make any changes to Section 702. The Intelligence Community conducts and uses 702 collection in a manner that protects the privacy and civil liberties of individuals.  Every single court that has reviewed Section 702 and queries of its data has found it to be constitutional.  The Intelligence Community’s use of Section 702, which permits targeted surveillance only of foreign persons located outside the United States, is subject to extensive oversight and incorporates substantial protections to protect the privacy and civil liberties of individuals.  In short, we believe Congress got it right in 2008 when it passed Section 702 and in 2012 when Congress reauthorized it.  Nevertheless, the Intelligence Community continues to be open to reasonable reforms to Section 702 to further enhance the already-substantial privacy protections contained in the law, but we simply cannot support legislation that would impede the operational efficacy of this vital authority.

We also believe it is important that Congress reauthorize Section 702 before it expires on December 31, 2017.  Although the current Section 702 certifications do not expire until April 2018, the Intelligence Community would need to start winding down its Section 702 program well in advance of that date.  Winding down such a valuable program would force agencies to divert resources away from addressing foreign threats. Short-term extensions are not the long-term answer either, as they fail to provide certainty, and will create needless and wasteful operational complications. We urge Congress, therefore, to act quickly to reauthorize Section 702 in a manner that preserves the effectiveness of this critical national security law before it expires.

Enderle Condemns GOP Call To Arms Comment

Lansing – Just minutes after the Supreme Court ruling on the Affordable Care Act, former GOP spokesman Matthew Davis called for armed rebellion.  In a tone more redolent of 1861 South Carolina than 1773 Boston, Davis’s email, entitled “Is Armed Rebellion Now Justified?,” equated today’s Supreme Court ruling to colonial tyranny, concluding with the vague threat: “God willing, this oppression will be lifted…before the first shot is fired.” 

When called, Davis defended his remarks.  “You can’t [just] have people walking around with lattes and signs.  Armed rebellion is the end point of that confrontation.” 

Lance Enderle, Democratic candidate for Michigan’s 8^th Congressional District, was quick to respond. 

“Reasonable Americans can disagree, vehemently, about political decisions.  But when the rhetoric turns to armed rebellion and violence, it is no longer dissent.  It’s yelling ‘Fire!’ in a crowded theater, and it’s a crime against the United States.  Inciting violence is not protected by the First Amendment.  The Michigan GOP and the Mackinac Center should immediately condemn Mr. Davis for his violent, dangerous, and frankly illegal conduct,” Enderle said. 

He then pointed out that his opponent, incumbent Mike Rogers, who sits on the Committee for Homeland Security and the Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence, should also be quick to condemn Mr. Davis’s call to arms. 

“If Mike was doing his job, he would be at the forefront, asking for the Department of Homeland Security to open investigations of Mr. Davis and the Mackinac Center for possible seditious conspiracy.”

18 USC 2385 states that “whoever knowingly or willfully prints, publishes…[or] distributes any printed matter advocating…or teaching the propriety of overthrowing any such government in the United States by force or violence…shall be fined under this title or imprisoned for not more than twenty years, or both, and shall be ineligible for employment by the United States or any department or agency thereof, for the next five years.”

LANSING -- Democratic candidate nominee for the 8th Congressional District Lance Enderle slammed Republican Mike Rogers (R-Brighton) Wednesday for joining with other Michigan Congressional Republicans and approving a measure to allow drilling for oil in the Great Lakes.

"I've said it from the beginning, Mike is a liar. He has no problem telling the people of the district one thing, but then voting to help his corporate cronies," Enderle said. "Here we have a clear, blatant example of Mike's lies. In October of 2010 he told the Argus Press that he was 'firmly opposed' to drilling in the lakes, and touted his alleged legislation to prevent such drilling. Today shows Mike is not 'firmly opposed,' only that he hadn't met the right corporate crony with the offer to soften his resolve."

Roger's own website re-published the entire article written by Christopher Behnan. The relevant part of the article follows:

"Enderle said Rogers was the only U.S. House or Senate member from Michigan who voted in favor of a measure to engage in oil-and-gas exploration in the United States.

He said Rogers has been lax on protection of the Great Lakes.

Rogers said he firmly opposes oil drilling in the Great Lakes and has voted in Congress to ban all drilling in the five lakes. He said he's sponsored legislation to ban new drilling permits and led bipartisan efforts to clean up toxic pollutants and fight invasive species in the lakes."

Adding to the insult, Enderle said, another Michigan community was struggling to identify and address a new pipeline oil spill. This spill occurred in Sterling, Michigan and resulted in a shut down of Enbridge Energy Partners Pipeline 5, which traverses much of the state's northern tier, as well as the upper peninsula, crossing into the lower peninsula under the straits of Mackinac. Enbridge owns Lakehead Pipeline 6B which had a catastrophic failure in July of 2010, spewing an estimated 1.1 million gallons of toxic tar sands oil into the Talmadge Creek and the Kalamazoo River. Up to 35 miles of the river and pristine natural areas were contaminated, and the company continues to work on cleaning up the spill.
The Great Lakes are not just a beautiful and important tourism attraction for Michigan.

1.5 Million Jobs from the Great Lakes. “The Great Lakes provide 1.5 million jobs in the U.S., and $62 billion in wages every year, according to a study by Michigan Sea Grant at the University of Michigan. The study said Michigan has the most jobs related to the Great Lakes, with 525,886. Others are Illinois (380,786), Ohio (178,621), Wisconsin (173,969), New York (157,547), Indiana (54,397), Pennsylvania (25,479) and Minnesota (11,877).” [The Grand Rapids Press, 2/24/11]

"Mike is appalling. He needs to return what ever blood money he received for this vote, and apologizes to the state and his constituents." says Enderle. "Mike has shown today that he is nothing more than a bought and paid for crony of corporate interests and the Republican party. He has neither the interest or the desire to solve Michigan's problems. It is time for Mike to go -- voluntarily with a resignation today, or in November with an election ouster."

LANSING-- Democratic candidate for the 8th Congressional District Lance Enderle today slammed Congressman Mike Rogers (R-Brighton) for his support of the ill-fated Canadian Keystone XL pipeline project.
The project would have traversed 1,200 miles of American soil, often in environmentally sensitive areas including a major aquifer, to transport tar sands oil from Canada to Texas. The oil in question is environmentally dangerous to remove from the earth, requiring massive amounts of water, steam and heat to remove, and must be mixed with other, lighter oil products to be transported under high pressure in pipelines. The oil is also tainted with toxic heavy metals like mercury.
The Obama administration on Wednesday announced it would reject the proposal for the pipeline. The move has been heavily criticized by Republicans, including GOP Rep. Tim Walberg, who represents Michigan's 7th which suffered thelargest environmental disaster in midwest history in July of 2010. At that time, the Enbridge Energy Partners Lakehead Pipeline 6B burst open spewing an estimated 1.1 million gallons of toxic tar sands oil and the petroleum "diluent" into the Talmadge Creek and the Kalamazoo River. Cleanup continues from the spill, with the company and the EPA having trouble removing a heavy tar-like substance left behind from the spill which is now covering acres of the bottom of the river.
On his Facebook page, Rogers called the Obama administration decision "short-sighted," claiming the move will "force" Canada to sell it's toxic oils sands product to China, and enrich Iran in the process.
"Evidently, Mike has no clue about the internal politics of Canada," said Enderle. "The First Nations of Canada have been very clear -- they won't allow pipelines to traverse their tribal lands, which would be necessary to fill tankers on the Pacific coast to tank over to China. And why do they oppose this? Because they know what residents of Calhoun County discovered in 2010 -- oil sands oil is toxic, dangerous and nearly impossible to remove from the environment."
"To claim that somehow Iran will ultimately be the beneficiary of Canadian oil to China is ridiculous on its face," Enderle continued. "China is currently getting oil from Iran, and getting more oil from Canada will simply reduce the demand for Iranian oil, reducing Iranian oil money. Mike is scare mongering."
"And all those jobs Mike is talking about? How many of them are 'indirect' jobs created by toxic, life-changing spills caused by improper handling of this toxic goo?" Enderle asked. "Yes we need jobs, but more jobs produced by scraping the bottom of the proverbial barrel of oil production helps no one, and makes the U.S. put off the important job of leading the world into the development of renewable energy sources which do not cause environmental catastrophes.”
