Michigan Steve Marino Gets Another Pass On Public Corruption

Nice looking out, Chad, but this may be a Detroit Grand Jury Issue...dealing with Grand Rapids, but, hey, what do I know?

I know this tale has yet to be told...or did the Celestial Goddess of the Woodshed start unraveling this one almost two decades ago?

Who knows.

We must sit and mull the moment Trump decides to stop obstructing justice and pull that IG Report from his backpocket.

Perhaps, we, the people, for not wanting to be misunderstood in translation for saying "us" when it was to mean "U.S.", must just wait and see if the world shall be granted that backpocket New Year's gift.

Oh, humbug...at least Mariia Butina is free.

Steve Marino Escapes Controversy…Again

By Chad Selweski on December 20th, 2019

Steve Marino
State Rep. Steve Marino, whose name surfaced repeatedly at the Larry Inman bribery trial in Lansing, has engaged in a host of political shenanigans throughout his political career, all the way back to, well, to 2014 when he was first elected at age 25.

The young Republican from Macomb County raised suspicions that he was allegedly involved in Rep. Inman’s scheme to pocket $10,000—perhaps as much as $30,000—in campaign contributions in exchange for voting to maintain the state’s prevailing wage law. Testimony suggested that Marino allegedly was keeping a tally of planned money exchanges as 12 House Republicans were targeted in 2018 by the carpenters union for an infusion of campaign bucks as an incentive to preserve the law.

During the trial, investigators tried to subpoena Marino to force him to testify. But they couldn’t find him. The FBI tried to interview him but he reportedly “made himself unavailable” and stopped returning the bureau’s phone calls. Inman, a Grand Rapids Republican, was saved by a deadlocked jury, though prosecutors may try him again. Marino is the guy who got away. Scot free.

A strange path into politics

Yet, Marino’s story of strange and sometimes sleazy politics took several twists and turns before that futile attempt to serve him with a subpoena.

The Harrison Township Republican decided in 2013, for God knows what reason, to pursue a career in politics. At that point, since he had first become a registered voter five years earlier, Marino had cast a ballot in just three of 13 elections. Among those he missed were the 2008 and 2010 general elections and the presidential primary of 2012.

Marino ran for county commissioner and caught a break. His challenger in the August 2014 GOP primary died in June, early enough so his name could be removed from the ballot, leaving Marino unopposed for the nomination. He won the general election that fall by tacitly inserting into the campaign the sudden death of the wife of his Democratic competitor, a tragedy years earlier that led to personal bankruptcy for the candidate.

Based on his campaign resume, Marino was an apparently self-employed political consultant (with no political experience) who specialized in assisting candidates with completion of their campaign finance reports. During the campaign, the county fined Marino for failing to file his campaign finance report on time.

Marino – enforcer of integrity?

When the commissioners were sworn into office in January 2015, they elected Marino as their Sergeant-At-Arms. That’s the guy who is supposed to keep everything orderly and proper during meetings of the Board of Commissioners. Steve Marino – enforcer of integrity in Macomb County government.

Things got a lot more shady when Marino quickly decided that he needed a promotion.  In February 2016, he announced his candidacy for state House in a highly competitive, nearly 50-50 district.

That’s when Marino, then a 27-year-old lobbyist, became infamous in Michigan politics. Democrat “trackers” secretly taped Marino’s remarks to small groups of constituents and supporters at informal coffee klatch events that summer.

The tapes made public by the Democrat Party caught Marino saying: U.S. corporations should take advantage of overseas child labor laws in factories that employ kids 10 to 12 years old; the Social Security eligibility age should be raised to 75; outsourcing jobs to China is an effective means for corporations to avoid paying American wage rates; as a lobbyist, he paid big bar tabs racked up by state legislators and, that he engaged in a ploy to avoid paying part of his property tax bill on the lakefront home he bought from his father.

When the media grabbed ahold of the story, Marino backpedaled furiously.  He recanted the story about buying booze for lawmakers, shamelessly saying he made it all up.

The liberal website Eclectablog concluded that Marino is either, “a sleazy lobbyist, a tax cheat, or an unmitigated liar. Or maybe all of the above.”

It seemed that things couldn’t get worse for Marino. But they did.

Indicted drug dealer to host his fundraiser

He announced an October campaign fundraiser at the home of his neighbor, Dr. Jennifer Franklin, though the invitations didn’t mention that she had been indicted by the feds as part of a drug ring that pedaled addictive pain killers such as Oxycodone.

Marino tried to spin the story when Franklin’s background became public, but in the end he cancelled the event. Months later, Franklin pleaded guilty in federal court to using her authority as a physician to help sell more than $2 million in pain pills on the street.

The political situation became so bad, Republican leaders in Lansing and pro-GOP lobbyists were ready to cut the cord on the self-destructive Marino, though his district was a high priority for the party.

Still, on Election Day in November 2016 Marino easily won election in the 24th House District (Harrison Township and parts of Clinton and Macomb townships), over a well-known Democrat county commissioner. Straight-ticket voting and the pro-Donald Trump furor, especially in that area of Macomb County, certainly played a major factor. He won re-election to the House by an identical margin in 2018.

To this day, it seems a safe bet that many of Marino’s constituents are entirely unaware of his path to that House seat or his recent ties to the Inman bribery scandal. Maybe some know him from his outrageous dog-and-pony show in 2017 when he introduced a package of bills to toughen ethics rules for legislators.

For others, in the wake of all the Macomb County political corruption unearthed in recent years, perhaps Marino is accepted as a chip off the old block.

Will The Michigan GOP & NRA Raise Money To Free Maria Butina?

MARIA BUTINA’S GOP CONTACTS ‘SHOULD BE CONCERNED,’ FORMER FBI AGENT WARNS

Maria Butina Pleads Guilty In Foreign Agent Case, Admits Clandestine Influence Scheme

A Russian woman who schemed to build back-channel ties between the Russian government and the Trump campaign pleaded guilty in federal court on Thursday to conspiring to act as a clandestine foreign agent.

Maria Butina also sought to connect Moscow unofficially with other parts of the conservative establishment, including the National Rifle Association and the National Prayer Breakfast.

She was arrested over the summer after having been monitored by the FBI, including in meetings in Washington, D.C., with Russian officials. Butina also had materials that suggested she was in contact with Russia's domestic intelligence service, the FSB, prosecutors said.

Butina appeared in court Thursday wearing a green jail uniform, her red hair in a long braid running down her back. She answered the judge's questions in a clear voice and without a Russian language interpreter.

District Judge Tanya Chutkan scheduled a status conference for Feb. 12 to assess the cooperation that Butina has given the government.

"The diplomacy project"

Butina worked in concert with her boyfriend, GOP fundraiser Paul Erickson, and a Russian handler, Alexander Torshin, who also cultivated his own relationships with important conservatives in the United States.

A lawyer for Erickson issued a statement after the hearing on Thursday.

"Paul Erickson is a good American," it said. "He has done nothing to harm our country and never would."

Torshin was a Russian government official who is reportedly retiring from his latest role as a deputy governor of the central bank.

Butina laid out her plans in a document called "Description of the Diplomacy Project," according to court documents; she wrote that she believed Russia could not reinvigorate ties with the United States through official institutions.

Instead, she argued, Moscow should expand its "unofficial channels of communication," of which she could be one.

The course she chose was via gun rights, building off Butina's history of shooting and gun ownership inside of Russia. So Butina, Erickson and Torshin sought to strengthen their relationships with the politically powerful NRA.

Butina and Torshin moved in gun rights circles in the United States and, according to court documents, she and other Russians also arranged to host NRA members in Moscow in late 2015.
"During the trip, the gun rights organization members met with high-level Russian government officials as arranged by" Torshin, according to court documents in the Butina case.

After the visit, Butina wrote to Torshin that "we should let them express their gratitude now, we will put pressure on them quietly later," prosecutors wrote in the court papers.
It isn't clear whether "pressure" actually might have been applied to the NRA, by whom or to what end, but its role in Russia's "active measures" has been the focus of scrutiny by members of Congress.
The back channel
Butina's work with her compatriots, meanwhile, continued.
Erickson, for example, sent an email to the office of then-Sen. Jeff Sessions, working as a Trump campaign booster, offering to use his NRA connections to establish a back channel between the Trumps and the Russian government.
He wrote this:
"I'm now writing to you and Sen. Sessions in your roles as Trump foreign policy experts / advisors. [...] Happenstance and the (sometimes) international reach of the NRA placed me in a position a couple of years ago to slowly begin cultivating a back-channel to President Putin's Kremlin. Russia is quietly but actively seeking a dialogue with the U.S. that isn't forthcoming under the current administration. And for reasons that we can discuss in person or on the phone, the Kremlin believes that the only possibility of a true re-set in this relationship would be with a new Republican White House."
House intelligence committee Democrats quoted that message in their response to the GOP majority's report that said the contacts between people in the Trump camp and Russians in 2016 were "ill-advised" but not evidence of conspiracy.

President Trump himself told Reuters on Tuesday that contacts between his aides and Russians in 2016 were "peanut stuff." Those contacts also, so far as the public evidence shows, did not yield a high-level meeting.
Although Torshin later met Donald Trump Jr. at an event during an NRA convention, Butina and her colleagues were not able to broker a conference between then-candidate Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin.

The work ran through Election Day 2016 and into the following year, when Torshin instructed Butina about which Russian attendees to arrange to become part of a delegation to the National Prayer Breakfast on Feb. 2, 2017.
Later, Erickson said in an email message on which Butina was cc'd:
"Reaction to the delegation's presence in America will be relayed DIRECTLY [emphasis in original] to the Russian President and Foreign Minister."

Butina is likely to face only up to six months in prison when she is sentenced in 2019. But prosecutors Erik Kenerson and Thomas Saunders left open the possibility they would write a letter seeking leniency for Butina depending on the extent of her cooperation.
Butina told the judge that she understands she is likely to be deported back to Russia after serving any prison sentence.

How Come The Kremlin Will Not Represent Mariia Butina?

Well, this is quite interesting.

If Maria was actually working for the Russian Federation as an official employee/agent, then that would mean the Kremlin would provide her with legal representation.

But they did not because she came in on a student VISA.

Or, was she an employee of a private corporation, or one of those Public Private Partnerships, considering the fact that these Quasi-Governmental Organizations (that do not incorporate) started in Russia, while going to school, if she was in school.

So, this means she was not engaged in espionage and is not an agent of a foreign government, unless that foreign government is another nation state other than Russia.

More than likely, it is just a bank.

Maybe it would be a conflict of interest if the Kremlin provided her legal counsel, if the same political infiltration schemes were used in Russian political organizations.

But, hey, what do I know?

I know the Kremlin is advocating for her human rights as a citizen of Russia and letting the world know the state of our prison system.

Perhaps, the Michigan GOP or the NRA can start a legal defense fund for her.

Maria Butina: Judge appoints another lawyer to advise Russian national in conspiracy case

Maria Butina: Judge appoints another lawyer to advise Russian national in conspiracy caseWASHINGTON – A federal judge appointed an additional lawyer on Thursday to advise Maria Butina, a Russian national charged with conspiracy and acting as the agent of a foreign government.

U.S. District Judge Tanya Chutkan appointed public defender A.J. Kramer as an advisory counsel to Butina without further explanation. The move came after Chutkan held a phone conference with Butina's defense lawyers, Robert Driscoll and Alfred Carry, and assistant U.S. attorneys Erik Kenreson and Thomas Saunders.

Butina has until Dec. 10 to argue why the transcript of the phone conference shouldn't be made public.

Chutkan scheduled a hearing Dec. 19 to get an update about the case. But on Wednesday, Chutkan scheduled the phone conference Thursday.

The U.S. attorney's office declined comment and defense lawyers didn't immediately respond to a request for comment. Chutkan earlier placed a gag order on both the federal prosecutors and the defense team that prevents them from speaking publicly about the case.

Prosecutors and defense lawyers had agreed Nov. 28 that "they remain optimistic about a pretrial resolution of this matter," meaning that a trial might not be necessary.

Meanwhile, the Russian Embassy in Washington issued a statement Thursday calling for Butina's immediate release and calling the case a "blatant outrage."

We will continue demanding the release of Maria, victim of the blatant outrage. Meanwhile, we have heard numerous statements by 🇺🇸 officials as regards the detained Ukrainian sailors. No such measures have been imposed on any of them
➡️ http://www.mid.ru/en/foreign_policy/news/-/asset_publisher/cKNonkJE02Bw/content/id/3430111 …

The case against Butina was filed by the U.S. attorney for the District of Columbia and is unrelated to Justice Department special counsel Robert Mueller's ongoing inquiry into Russia's interference in the 2016 presidential election.

Butina, who entered the U.S. in 2016 on a student visa, has been jailed as a flight risk without bond in Alexandria, Virginia, since her arrest in July. She has been held for months in solitary confinement, which keeps her in "a steel door cage the size of a parking space" for 22 hours each day, according to one of her court filings. She asked Chutkan to allow her into the jail's general population, but was rejected.

Butina is accused of engaging in a years-long campaign as a covert agent for the Kremlin in an attempt to "advance the interests of her home country."

She is accused of infiltrating multiple political organizations, including the National Rifle Association, to gain influence for Russia.

In the original charging documents filed in July, prosecutors claimed that Butina worked at the direction of "a high-level official in the Russian government who was previously a member of the legislature of the Russian Federation and later became a top official at the Russian Central Bank."

The official, whose description matches Alexander Torshin, had been sanctioned by the Treasury Department's Office of Foreign Assets Control in April 2018 and is prohibited from traveling to the U.S.

The pair identified political organizations and politically connected individuals who they could "exploit," the indictment said. She has been active with the NRA in recent years and is credited for creating a Russian version of the gun-rights organization, which officials have pointed to as a way for her to gain contacts and supporters.

A March report issued by Democrats on the House Intelligence Committee referred to the public reporting about Butina and Torshin, claiming that Butina "sought to facilitate meetings with Trump campaign officials and between President Putin and candidate Trump during the election."

FEDERAL PROSECUTORS NEGOTIATING WITH ALLEGED RUSSIAN AGENT THEY MISTAKENLY ACCUSED OF OFFERING SEX FOR ACCESS

Butina, 29, was indicted on July 17 on a conspiracy charge and for acting as an unregistered foreign agent of Russia. She is accused of attempting to infiltrate conservative political groups, including the National Rifle Association, at the direction of Alexander Torshin, the deputy chief of Russia’s central bank.

(RELATED: Russian National Linked To NRA Is Charged With Acting As Russian Agent)

Butina, who attended American University, was a gun rights activist who co-founded The Right to Bear Arms, a pro-gun group in Russia.

Butina and her boyfriend, a conservative political operative named Paul Erickson, had extensive contact with top NRA officials. Erickson also made several attempts in May 2016 to arrange meetings between members of the Trump campaign and Torshin.

Torshin appeared at an event on the sidelines of the NRA convention in Louisville in May 2016. He did not meet with Donald Trump at the event, but did briefly greet Donald Trump Jr.

Prosecutors have accused Butina of operating covertly. They have claimed to have evidence that Butina met with Russian operatives in the U.S.

In a complaint filed against Butina on July 18, U.S. attorney Jessie Liu accused Butina of offering sex in exchange for access to a special interest organization. Butina’s lawyers said text messages showed that Butina was joking with a friend in Russia who had repaired her car.

Liu acknowledged the mistake in a court filing submitted on Aug. 24.

“Even granting that the government’s understanding of this particular text conversation was mistaken, other communications and materials in the government’s possession (and produced to the defense) call into doubt the defendant’s claim that her relationship with U.S. Person 1 is a sufficiently strong tie to ensure her appearance in court to face the charges against her if she is released.”

U.S. Person 1 is believed to be Erickson.

Russian National Charged in Conspiracy to Act as an Agent of the Russian Federation Within the United States

WASHINGTON – A criminal complaint was unsealed today in the District of Columbia charging a Russian national with conspiracy to act as an agent of the Russian Federation within the United States without prior notification to the Attorney General.

The announcement was made by Assistant Attorney General for National Security John C. Demers, U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia Jessie K. Liu, and Nancy McNamara, Assistant Director in Charge of the FBI’s Washington Field Office.

Mariia Butina, 29, a Russian citizen residing in Washington D.C., was arrested on July 15, 2018, in Washington, D.C., and made her initial appearance this afternoon before Magistrate Judge Deborah A. Robinson in the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia. She was ordered held pending a hearing set for July 18, 2018.

According to the affidavit in support of the complaint, from as early as 2015 and continuing through at least February 2017, Butina worked at the direction of a high-level official in the Russian government who was previously a member of the legislature of the Russian Federation and later became a top official at the Russian Central Bank.  This Russian official was sanctioned by the U.S. Department of the Treasury, Office of Foreign Assets Control in April 2018.

The court filings detail the Russian official’s and Butina’s efforts for Butina to act as an agent of Russia inside the United States by developing relationships with U.S. persons and infiltrating organizations having influence in American politics, for the purpose of advancing the interests of the Russian Federation. The filings also describe certain actions taken by Butina to further this effort during multiple visits from Russia and, later, when she entered and resided in the United States on a student visa. The filings allege that she undertook her activities without officially disclosing the fact that she was acting as an agent of Russian government, as required by law.

The charges in criminal complaints are merely allegations and every defendant is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt. The maximum penalty for conspiracy is five years.  The maximum statutory sentence is prescribed by Congress and is provided here for informational purposes.  If convicted of any offense, a defendant’s sentence will be determined by the court based on the advisory U.S. Sentencing Guidelines and other statutory factors.

The investigation into this matter was conducted by the FBI’s Washington Field Office. The case is being prosecuted by the National Security Section of the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Columbia and the National Security Division of the U.S. Department of Justice.

Russian National Charged in Conspiracy to Act as an Agent of the Russian Federation Within the United States

Ex-Michigan GOP chairman photographed with accused Russian spy

LANSING — A former chairman of the Michigan Republican Party who was photographed with an accused Russian secret agent said Tuesday he’s met Maria Butina a couple of times but has never had a much of a conversation with her.

A photograph of Saul Anuzis and Butina began circulating on social media Monday after the U.S. Justice Department announced Butina had been arrested and charged with conspiracyto act as an agent of the Russian Federation within the United States without prior notification to the Attorney General.

Anuzis said he remembers the photo being taken in 2016 or 2015 at the FreedomFest, an annual conservative gathering in Las Vegas.

"I met her a couple of times," Anuzis told the Free Press -- once at the FreedomFest and another time during a chance encounter at an airport. "I actually have never had much of a conversation with her, other than being introduced to her."

In the photograph being circulated on social media, Anuzis said he believes he was looking on as Butina was being interviewed by a media outlet. He said he understood she was a Russian proponent of gun rights and the National Rifle Association.

Anuzis said he knows nothing about the criminal accusations against Butina, but he assumes they are legitimate.

Butina, 29, was arrested on the weekend and a criminal complaint against her was unsealed Monday. She is in custody pending a hearing, accused of trying to infiltrate U.S. political groups, including an unnamed gun rights organization, and cultivate relationships with American politicians to establish “back channel” lines of communication to advance Russia’s agenda.

Michigan Democratic Party Chairman Brandon Dillon tweeted the photo Tuesday, saying it showed Anuzis "hanging out with a Russian spy."

Anuzis retweeted the photo, with the message: "Too funny, ah,... those dirty Russians:)"

Anuzis, a political consultant who was chairman of the Michigan Republican Party from 2005 to 2009, served briefly as Michigan chairman of the presidential campaign of Sen. Ted Cruz of Texas before supporting President Donald Trump as the nominee.

Anuzis said he thought Trump's performance Monday at a joint news conference with Russian President Vladimir Putin -- at which Trump expressed more confidence in Putin's denials than in U.S. national security determinations that Russia interfered in the 2016 U.S. election -- "was horrible."

"He missed an important opportunity to call both Putin and the Russians out," Anuzis said.

"I recognize his desire to have good relations and have some kind of dilalogue, but I think he just overplayed his desire to be polite."

The moral of the story is, once again, "Do not be mean to my Sweetie. Period."
