The first thing I did upon landing on the home page was to ask myself, "What the hell is a Foster Care Navigator?"

So, I clicked the drop down menu link and found this:

What is a Foster Care Navigator?
A Foster Care Navigator (FCN) is someone who serves as a liaison between current and prospective foster parents and their agency. Each FCN will mentor, through their own experience, parents navigating through the world of foster care.
Modeled after the Michigan Adoption Resource Exchange (MARE) Adoption Navigator program, Foster Care Navigators are trained and experienced current and former foster parents who have navigated through their own foster care experiences.

It was at that point that I realized that we are priming for the blue pinwheel month in the launch of a full scale admirality defense of the work of the lord, in Public Private Partner-ships, to finally take over the residuals of the peculiar institution, by invading our shores with Micro-Privateers, or rather Foster Care Navigators.

What is a Micro Tiny Human Privateer?
A Micro Privateer is an individual who has been anointed in the acquisition of goods through the process of child welfare law and policy to ensure an unimpeded transfer of parental rights in the entire tiny human asset management system, for the purposes of maximizing revenues, to fund political campaigns in the promulgation of child welfare propaganda 

So, who eactly were geniuses behind this trafficking tiny humans program, because I could see the paretal optimalization, not just in the operations of data scrapping human intelligence for Predictive Modeling Crappers to pitch more of their latest and greatest Social Impact Bond Programs, I saw private research being funded through Medicaid?

How are these people pitching programs to increase graduation rates for kids in foster care when Michigan has a human trafficking issue, otherwise known as Foster Care and Adoption?

Then, it dawned on me.

Grand Valley State University just got re-upped on their Fiduciary certification for their K-12 schools, that I have previously reported on in activities of fraudulent Medicaid billing of these foster kids, where you can comtemporaniously be the school superintendent of your own, privately contracted school administration business.

Think of it, you can take all those foster youth identities, re-segregated data labeling assets, push them out on paper only high school graduation certificates in those university dual programs, to capture all that Chaffee and other educational grants, to lump and financially leverage, because you can end up selling all those identities, complete with degrees.

These university students, yes, I said students, pitch their quick and dirty data survey crap, where they are  robed sheepskin,  to go forth and carry on the will of their cloaked, foreign funded, masters.

See, instead of getting a bunch of Predictive Modeling Crappers into one room to come up with more revenue maximization trafficking tiny humans programs, you do it online, in surveys, and you can do it in bots, because this chick presented how great her concepts are because they got lots of clicks, as seen in Google Analytics.

Yup.

Online clicking for policy bot programming is another great field to go into as a Micro Tiny Human Navigator.

Micro Tiny Human Navigators can work from home, and can write their own books, have their own websites and do youtube videos to get more "likes" or write their own white papers, published by universities, to prove they are great for university tenure or just booking for your next, child welfare propaganda, special support network events!

Hamtramck Partners With Samaritas To Build Its First Religious Freedom Human Asset Plantation Management System Authority Pilot Model

I see so many issues here.

I see the Wayne County Land Bank Corporation, which never incorporated, just like the Detroit Land Bank Authority never incorporated where Bill *Smooches* Shuette dissolved the LLC in the Michigan Court of Claims, where it was entered into the record that there was only one, legally recognized, Federal EIN and State tax identification...but I digress.

I see Public Private Partnerships.

I see Faith Based Funding.

I see Michigan Land Bank Fast Track Authority.

I see Mike Duggan.

I see human sociopsych experiments.

I see the second tier of this transposable model to a large swath of land interested foreign parties have been sitting on for quite some time.

Hamtramck street to get $1.2M in new homes built for refugees

This location on Faber St. in Hamtramck is the site of a planned $1.2 million refugee housing project. Three two-family homes will be constructed with federal housing dollars for a total of six refugee families. Construction is expected to be completed in 2020.

A $1.2 million refugee housing project is coming to Hamtramck.

Using federal housing dollars, Wayne County is partnering with nonprofit groups Samaritas and Wayne Metropolitan Community Action Agency to develop a block on Faber Street in Hamtramck to build three homes that have two units each. The Privateers are here and they have set up their Public Private Partnerships to take over Hamtramck, self-anointed as a sanctuary city.

The housing — called 'Freedom Village' — will accommodate a total of six refugee families and is expected to open in the summer of 2020.  Remember, Public Private Partnerships take villages, then pilfers its treasures. This is only a test run and it will not get very far so just sit back and enjoy the show.

The money for the project is from a federal grant program through the U.S. Department of Housing and Development (HUD) that supports low-income families. The housing is for refugees with low incomes, in need of temporary housing after they settle in the U.S.  The housing program for domestic low income families is called Foster Care, Elder Foster Care, or Prison.

“Freedom Village seeks to provide a better life to low-income refugees and immigrants by surrounding them with the resources they need to eventually pursue permanent homeownership opportunities,”  Wayne County Executive Warren Evans said last week in a statement announcing the project. "We are a welcoming county that derives its strength from the diversity of its residents, and this project epitomizes that core value."

Hamtramck has the highest percentage of immigrants among cities in Michigan, about 44%, according to U.S. Census data. Because no one really cares. You can survive in Hamtramck without papers. There is a network.

It was historically known as a center for Polish immigrants, but today, Yemeni Americans make up the biggest ethnic group, followed by Bangladeshi Americans. The two groups have revitalized a city that was declining in population and transformed vacant areas into thriving business corridors, such as along Conant Avenue. 

The city has also taken in Bosnian and Serbian refugees in recent decades escaping the Balkan conflicts.

It's unclear what countries the refugees for the new housing will come from. That decision is made later by U.S. government officials working with resettlement agencies. Samaritas, which formerly was known as Lutheran Social Services of Michigan, has resettled refugees in Michigan over the years. I am going with south of the border. Hamtramck only needs a jewish temple and South American pyramid to be recognized as the ultimate global village.

"We're really excited," Hamtramck Mayor Karen Majewski told the Free Press. "We've long been a home to immigrants. That's kind of how we were born. Through the years, as the political situations have changed, we've welcomed refugees as well."

The refugees will rent the houses, said Wayne County spokesman Keith Owens. They may be able to qualify for vouchers that allow them to pay no more than one-third of their income on housing. Refugees generally receive some financial assistance for a few months after they arrive in the U.S. that can help with housing costs.

The city of Hamtramck will not bear any of the costs for the project, which Wayne County said will contribute revenue to Hamtramck by adding homes to the vacant lots that bring them back onto the tax rolls. Oh, yes they will. Just wait for it or you could ask Corporate Council. I believe he may become a public figure on the local news, soon.

Vacant lots are being used for the new housing. Two of them were owned by the city of Hamtramck, one by Wayne County Land Bank, and one by Michigan Land Bank Fast Track Authority.  The Piast Institute used to hold lots of Wayne Country Treasurer property foreclosure meetings, you know, so I thought it would be fun to climb up the chain of command on the land.  I would, but it will be more fun to watch the reactions to this statement.  I have popcorn, you know.

Wayne County acquired the lot from Michigan Land Bank Fast Track Authority, and the Wayne County Land Bank purchased the two lots from Hamtramck for $1 each, said Wayne County.  If, in fact, the Wayne County Land Bank, which never incorporated, purchased the lots in a ceremonious transfer of $1.00, then, how was the transaction conducted? Is there a money order or did someone just toss two bucks on the City Clerk counter and walked away without a receipt?  

The Wayne County Metropolitan Community Action Agency, a nonprofit group that helps the poor, will be the property developer while Samaritas will the refugee placement and services provider. The Wayne County Land Bank Corporation is also part of the agreement.

Wayne County Metropolitan Community Action Agency will subcontract with, more than likely, the same people who got the bids for the NSP1 crappy negro removal homes, which was set up as a bait and switch to line a few pockets of some preachers and politicians who did not care about anything but stealin'. Someone is going to get a re-election campaign funded, but I digress.

As part of the agreement, Wayne County will loan $1.2 million at zero percent interest to the Wayne Metropolitan Community Action Agency. The HUD program that's involved with the project is the HOME Investment Partnerships Program, which "supports affordable housing by providing rental housing and homeownership opportunities for low-income families," said Wayne County in a statement.  Why is this an external link of HUD.gov? 

The project aims to help the refugees with job training, school, and home buyer assistance for future more permanent housing, said county officials. Lots and lots of Social Impact Bond Medicaid billing programs to be create jobs.

“Freedom Village is a beacon of hope and compassion," said Wayne County Metropolitan Community Action Agency CEO Louis Piszke. "The project demonstrates Wayne County’s commitment to America’s long-standing practice of helping people seeking asylum." Freedom Village is just a fun name for a human plantation rathole on a ratline for stealin' the children, land and votes. By calling it a "village" is a public announcement of a privatization initiative of establishing a newly recognized "authority" or rather a fake ass Public Private Partnership like the Detroit Land Bank Authority goes around pretending to be as a "public body corporate", just because they have a foreign corporate parent, in this case, Samaritas, who in turn, claims corporate parental rights over the goods of its human asset management system, like taking out mortgages to buy homes, expanding the realm of its tax exempt land.

The new housing comes at at time of a significant decrease in the number of refugees being admitted into the U.S.  I had another video of Bill Clinton explaining the reason on why he was bringing in Syrian immigrants to qualify for the HOME mortgage operation to rebuild Detroit's population, but this video will do just as well, which is why I believe we have ourselves another one of those pesky transposable stealin' models.

The number of refugees resettled in Michigan dropped 75% during the first fiscal year under President Donald Trump, the Free Press previously reported. In the 2018 fiscal year, which was from Oct. 1, 2017, to Sept. 30, 2018, Michigan took in only 647 refugees — the lowest number since 2006. One reason why Detroit, has seen a drop in resettled refugees is because the Detroit Land Bank Authority stole all the properties, then let them get stripped and torn up by the elements so they could that TARP, but then stole all the TARP, so there was no money left to fix the properties, so there was no place to move into to live and vote. Do you not just despise it when your best stealin' plan goes awry?

The number of refugees from the Middle East coming to Michigan has plummeted while refugees from the Democratic Republic of Congo are now the largest group in the state, making up more than 43% of Michigan's refugee population in 2018. Congo has lots of much desired natural resources which makes it only logical to come up with another forced migration socioeconomic test pilot program, more than likely being run out University of Michigan, but hey, what do I know? I know one should ask Karen Majewski.

The housing could help stabilize Hamtramck, which has a poverty rate of about 50% and is facing revenue challenges.   The rate of poverty is < 80% using the Hamtramck Public Schools free lunch waivers of Title IV-A 150% below the federal poverty level because I measure child poverty because no one cares.  There is a failure to include undocumented individuals which is significant because I said so.

"Hamtramck is probably one of the more desirable places to start as a family the way our community is set up, with the businesses a family needs," said Hamtramck City Councilman Anam Miah. "You can literally walk to anywhere, don't have to rely on public transportation or having a car." http://anammiah.com

A 'heart in the right spot' required as refugee kids head to Lansing foster care instead of detention centers

Though Lansing is 1,500 miles from the U.S.-Mexican border, Capital City-area residents have a chance to help refugee children caught in the humanitarian crisis.

Children who have crossed the border without a parent need safe, loving homes for a little while, and two nonprofits are looking for foster homes in the Lansing area that fit the bill.

Samaritas, a Detroit-based social services agency, formerly called Lutheran Social Services, just announced it has a contract to place up to 26 children in transitional foster care in Lansing and Ann Arbor.

Bethany Christian Services and Samaritas are seeking new foster homes to help children.

It joins Bethany Christian Services, a Grand Rapids-based nonprofit dealing with foster care and refugee services, which has already ramped up a program with five foster families.

So far, five refugee kids have been in care and three more are on their way, said Bethany spokeswoman Allison Preston-Smith. Four of those children have been reunited with relatives in the U.S. after spending time in Lansing area homes.

Bethany is looking for enough foster homes to place a total of 18 children in the Lansing area.

“The (foster care) program lets them be kids again and go to school, play with friends, and be in a regular routine again,” Preston-Smith said in an email.

Both programs are aimed at offering temporary homes to refugee children, technically called unaccompanied children, until they can be reunited with family members in the U.S.

It’s no longer the official U.S. policy to separate children from parents at the border. President Trump ended the practice last year. But it’s unclear how successful the U.S. has been in keeping families together.

The humanitarian crises at the U.S.-Mexico border has tugged at a lot of heartstrings, mine included. I wondered if foster parents would be seen as complicit in misguided border policy that’s contributed to the humanitarian crisis.

I was swayed by talking to parents and officials that the programs put kids, likely scared and confused, into loving homes.

In other words, the programs are an apolitical part of a politically charged problem. Supporters of President Trump argue he’s doing the right thing to end a “catch-and-release” policy at the border. Critics say the U.S. is treating refugees inhumanely.

Six migrant kids died
The images of people living in intolerable conditions in detention centers and weeping children taken from their parents are beyond disturbing.

“Everybody has a different perspective on what’s happening at the border,” said Kevin Van Den Bosch, chief operations officer — child and family at Samaritas. “…What we’re trying to do is create a sanctuary, a safe place.”

One Lansing critic of U.S. border policy, Oscar Castaneda, chair of the Civil Rights for Immigrants Task Force of the Action of Greater Lansing, a faith-based coalition, said he has mixed feelings about foster care. Reasonable immigration policies would be better but foster care homes beat the alternative of overcrowded detention centers.

“They still are better than the option of having the kids incarcerated,” he said.

'They've got to have fun'
John and Judy are Lansing-area foster parents. They asked that their last names not be used, saying it was part of the requirements from the federal Office of Refugee Resettlement. They cared for siblings, ages 7 and 8, for a month this summer.

The couple, who have grandchildren, are new foster parents working with Bethany. They said they tried to keep the girls busy with healthy and fun activities until they could be reunited with a family member already living in the U.S.

“They’re kids. They’ve got to eat. They’ve got to sleep. They’ve got to have fun,” John said. “It was a wonderful experience.”

The girls loved to ride bikes. The couple said the children attended school each weekday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., giving them a respite. Children attend a Bethany program for education rather than public schools.

John and Judy don’t speak Spanish but used Google translator to communicate.

“It’s not a requirement for you to be bilingual. People find a way, and kids find a way to communicate,” said Sandra Severo-Lopez, transitional foster care site supervisor for Bethany in East Lansing.

You don’t have to have an Ozzie-and-Harriet traditional home to be a foster family either. Foster parents can be single, renters and full-time workers. They must be over 18 and clear a check on the Michigan Child Abuse and Neglect Central Registry.

You must also go through the rest of the licensing process with the state of Michigan, which can take months.

“I always say the most important (requirement) is to have your heart in the right spot,” Severo-Lopez said.

Bethany reimburses foster families $50 a day to offset the cost of caring for children. Samaritas’ rate is $40 a day.

Michigan Supreme Court to decide controversy over private school funding

LANSING — The Michigan Supreme Court says it will decide once and for all whether the Michigan Legislature can appropriate public money for private schools.

And in making that determination, the court will consider a 2017 ruling by the U.S. Supreme Court that suggests a state ban on funding for private schools could violate a U.S. constitutional provision intended to protect religious liberty.

At issue is a series of Michigan budget moves in recent years in which the GOP-controlled Legislature has appropriated millions of dollars to reimburse private schools for costs they incur to comply with state mandates, such as health and safety regulations.

In an order released Tuesday, the court said it will hear an appeal of the Michigan Court of Appeals October 2018 ruling. In that decision, the court said the Legislature may reimburse private schools for the costs to comply with state health, safety and welfare laws, but only if such costs are incidental to teaching and don't involve a key school function.

In Tuesday's order, Supreme Court Justice Stephen Markman said the court needs to resolve the longstanding issue once and for all.

"The court owes the parties, and the people of this state, a final decision in this case that fairly considers all inextricably connected issues," Markman wrote.

"The need to fully and finally resolve the present dispute has been made especially critical by the fact that it has now been nearly three years since the Legislature (first approved such funding) and since a lower court of this state issued a preliminary injunction preventing that law from taking effect."

Justice Elizabeth Clement will not participate in the decision due to her previous role as legal counsel to former Gov. Rick Snyder, the court said.

In the 2017 case, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that a Missouri Department of Natural Resources policy of denying grants to applicants owned or controlled by a church violated the First Amendment rights of Trinity Lutheran Church of Columbia to freely exercise its religion. The policy denied the church an otherwise available public benefit on account of its religious status, the court said in a 7-2 ruling.

In honor of Juneteenth, the U.S. celebrates, well, not really because the majority of Americans have no idea of what it means, the emancipation of slaves with the signing of the Emancipation Proclamation.

According to Wikipedia:

Juneteenth, also known as Juneteenth Independence Day or Freedom Day, is an American holiday that commemorates the June 19, 1865, announcement of the abolition of slavery in the U.S. state of Texas, and more generally the emancipation of enslaved African Americans throughout the former Confederate States of America. Its name is a portmanteau of "June" and "nineteenth", the date of its celebration.[1][2] Juneteenth is recognized as a state holiday or special day of observance in 45 states.[3]

But slavery was never abolished because of the Exception Clause, or rather the word "except".


We need a more sustainable solution to the global orphan crisis

I understand why people think orphanages effectively address the global orphan crisis. According to UNICEF, there are around 140 million orphans currently in the world. And orphanages can provide a place where children are safe with basic needs met. They have toys, clothing and shelter. They go to school. They sometimes have a swing set.

In keeping with this and the agency’s commitment to adapt to the evolving realities of the AIDS crisis, UNICEF commissioned an analysis of population household surveys across 36 countries. Designed to compare current conditions of orphans and non-orphans, the global analysis suggests we should further expand our scope, focusing less on the concept of orphanhood and more on a range of factors that render children vulnerable. These factors include the family's ownership of property, the poverty level of the household, the child’s relationship to the head of the household, and the education level of the child’s parents, if they are living. In UNICEF’s experience, these are the elements that can help identify both children and their families – whether this term includes living parents, grandparents or other relatives – who have the greatest need for our support.

Orphanages allow loving, well-intentioned people to see the direct results of their donations and their work in a tangible way. But are they what’s really best for children? Decades of research tells us no.  It’s time to change how we respond to the Global Orphan Crisis. First, we need to understand that in many ways it’s not an orphan crisis, but an “orphanage” crisis, and in order to usher in real change, we must start to visualize a solution that doesn’t have four sturdy walls:

Families.

Forced migration.

Human trafficking.

Orphanages, however loving and compassionate the staff, founders and surrounding community, are not adequate substitutes for real families. Studies have shown that institutional care – like orphanages - affects the way a child’s brain develops, causing dramatic developmental delays and even stunts physical growth; institutionalized children average 1.0–1.5 standard deviations below the mean for parent-reared children with respect to physical growth and behavioral and mental development. In fact, decades of research have shown us how children’s brains develop differently when affected by abuse and neglect. This changes how children form relationships and limits their ability to attach to others.

Orphanages are human plantations, warehouses of god, complete with a recordkeeping database of legacies, created by christian missionaries to "Salvage the Souls" by "Saving the Savages" by indoctrinating the society to the socioeconomic system of the tax exempt god.

If parents are humans, where humans are carbon. and climate change is about reducing carbon, would that then be one reason behind the need for more orphanages?

Then, there is the logistical issue of a few workers caring for many children. Young children are hardwired to need more than just food and water—they need attention and touch and positive affirmation from a consistent and present role model. Even the most good-hearted orphanage employees cannot possibly fulfill these emotional needs to a large group of children in a truly satisfactory manner. Groups of well-intentioned youth groups and church volunteers can also not meet these needs for children.  Everything about growing up in an orphanage has life-altering consequences.

Think about your own family. If something awful were to happen, you wouldn’t want your child would go to an orphanage. Not even one with toys, a school and a swing set.

Parents in the United States often make arrangements for their children to live with relatives should anything unexpected happen, and when that’s not an option, we rely on foster care. By the 1950s, more children lived in foster homes than in orphanages in the United States. Today, U.S. orphanages have largely disappeared with foster care taking their place.

According to UNICEF data, an estimated 90 percent of “orphaned” children around the world actually have at least one living parent. Some parents surrender children to an orphanage because an extenuating circumstance – poverty, illness, regional violence, war or displacement – leads them to that point. If my child is in an orphanage, they think, at least they’ll eat. At least they’ll have a chance to go to school. At least they’ll have a chance at life.

For parents facing desperate options, poverty, the orphanage down the road that promises food and education becomes a good option and surrendering that child is the loving choice. They see it as the best option – or, often, their only option – for their child’s survival or education.

Poverty should never be a reason to place a child in an orphanage but it is andthere is nothing anyone can do about it – orphanages were never made to meet this need. They were once necessary in the midst of large-scale crises, like the HIV/AIDS crisis, that took the lives of entire villages. But now, orphanages should be a last resort, because there is a better way: Family-centered, individualized care.

Foster care that has been contextualized to function effectively in developing countries should be the alternative to orphanages. It’s time to change our understanding of orphanages to reflect the fact that most of the children in them are not actually orphaned.  The majority of children in orphanages worldwide have one or two living parents. Family preservation and family strengthening programs, like temporary foster care, should replace orphanages and be offered to help assist parents thrive and remain together with their children.

Christians who feel strongly the biblical call to care for the widow and orphan, and who have led the missions work to build orphanages in the past, are uniquely qualified to lead a movement of change within the Western Church.  It is time to stand against orphanage-based care and instead support local, community-based foster care around the world. Foster care was the right decision in the U.S. in the early 1900s and it’s the right decision now on a Global stage.

But the Global effort must foremostly empower the local leaders and social work professionals to lead the change in their own communities. Do your understand you are promulgating human trafficking?  No, seriously, you actually published this into the public record. You need to re-read this, with your eyes closed, and think of yourself as a parent who has had their child snatched from their arms, based upon an anonymous call.

A family setting best supports a child’s spiritual, physical, psychological, social, and emotional needs. I urge Christians, churches and global outreach organizations across the U.S. during this National Foster Care Month to help us in this movement to support families, reunify children in orphanages with their families and establish foster care systems around the world, because every child is made in the image of God, and each of them matters.

When Michigan stops intentionally making people poor, ends the criminalization of poverty, you shall find there is no longer a need for foster mothers and fathers, because there degrees of consanguinity and affinity already in place.

Michigan needs more foster mothers and fathers

Farmington Hills — Sarah Sporny says she has always had a heart for children. But what she needed was some mac-n-cheese, twin bed sheets and a car seat.

Sporny recalled the phone call in 2016 from a foster care agency worker who said a 6-year-old boy needed a home: would Sarah and her husband Rob, who had obtained their foster care license after intensive training, be ready in hours for their first foster child?

"I asked a lot of questions. There is a lot about a kid. It's important you know what you are getting into," said Sarah, a social worker for 20 years.

The couple met the little brown-haired boy inside a Bob Evans where he was focused on his pancakes.

After a short conversation about making chocolate chip pancakes at his new foster home, the child walked out of the restaurant with the Spornys. And without prompting, while the adults talked, the boy hopped into the back of the family car and belted himself in.

At home, the boy wrapped himself up in a blanket that night and laid on Rob's lap as a movie played. This family of two was suddenly now three.

"It was the sweetest night," Sarah said.

The Spornys fostered the child for six months before he was reunited to his biological family. Sarah says she and her husband would do it all over again and are awaiting their next call to foster another child who needs a home.

"It's incredibly rewarding," Sarah said. "It feels incredibly loving. And I found that I really loved parenting, picking him up from school, reading books, nighttime snuggles."

As of April, 13,574 children are in foster care in Michigan. That includes 3,297 in Wayne County, 698 in Oakland County and 613 in Macomb County. Yet there are only 6,000 foster homes ready to take in a child.

The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services, which oversees the state’s foster care system, says the first step to becoming a foster parent is contacting a Foster Care Navigator, experienced foster parents who can answer questions, help individuals find an agency and provide guidance.

“Foster parents are critically important in helping us meet our mission of protecting the safety and well-being of children,” MDHHS Director Robert Gordon said.

Children land in foster care who have been victims of abuse and neglect and who need temporary homes to care for them, until they can be safely reunified with their parents or find adoptive homes.

Laura Mitchell, executive director of foster care for Samaritas, a nonprofit that recruits and supports foster care families, supports 900 kids and families in foster care every day. The agency also works with birth parents to restore rights, which is the goal of foster care.

"Foster care is never because of what a child did. It was what was done to them," Mitchell said.

The children have experienced abuse, neglect and trauma, she said.

"All of our kids have some sort of trauma," Mitchell said. "Even just being removed from home. Home is where we are magnetically pulled, and we feel that connection to family. Kids who have experienced trauma don’t know how to process that."

Foster parents are trained on how to recognize and respond to trauma in children.

"Often times, kids are seen as bad or naughty kids due to their behavior, but that is their response to trauma," Mitchell said. "It's our role to make sure foster parents are educated on the effects of trauma to a child and also help the child work through that trauma."

Foster care parents see children not only need love and attention but need support to heal, Mitchell said.

"The amount of selfless love and commitment they give to a child who is hurting and has had very difficult life experience is amazing," she said.

Jessica Sweet, a foster and adoptive parent recruitment support and development manager at DHHS, said becoming a foster parent takes a lot of patience and skill. The state uses a specialized program called PRIDE to train parents.

"As much as we try to support and prepare people ahead of time, it's something you can't fully learn until you start doing it," Sweet said. "We ask families to assess what they are capable of, what areas do they need support."

Gov. Gretchen Whitmer proclaimed May to be Foster Care Month in Michigan to encourage people to consider becoming foster parents and to recognize those who are already doing so.

“Every child deserves a safe, loving and stable home,” Whitmer said. “This month and throughout the year, I hope Michiganders will consider opening up their homes to children in foster care.”

Cathe Hoover, an adoption, guardianship, recruitment and retention program manager at DHHS, said there are a lot of misconceptions about becoming a foster parent.

You do not need to be married or own your own home, Hoover said, and it often takes a person a few years between being curious about foster care and reaching out to a foster care agency to take those next steps.

"A lot of this is word of mouth," Hoover said. "If you know someone who does this you can see this. There is a lot of support and they aren't left on an island. It’s a really big decision people are making for their families."

Sarah Sporny, who now has an 18-month-old son, said she thinks about her foster son every day although it's been nearly three years since she has seen him.

She said she will think about him on Mother's Day as she celebrates being a mother with her family.

"I absolutely loved my foster son. Sometimes, I say loved, but I still love him," she said. "He hasn't been here for three years, but I love that child."

Sarah says being a foster parent was a good experience, but she knows it's unclear what the next foster care experience may be like.

"It might be better. It might be worse," she said. "So there is always some apprehension on what the next child will be like, but it's worth it, and I am willing to take that chance," she said.
