Thomas D'Alesandro III, Nancy Pelosi's Brother Has Passed
Elijah Cummings also recently died.
(CNN)Thomas D'Alesandro III, a former Baltimore mayor who led the city during the 1968 riots and brother of Democratic House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, has died.
"My husband Paul and our entire family are devastated by the loss of our patriarch, my beloved brother, Thomas D'Alesandro III," Pelosi said Sunday in a statement released by her office. "Tommy was the finest public servant I have ever known."
The Baltimore Sun reported D'Alesandro, who served as Baltimore's mayor from 1967 to 1971, died Sunday at his Baltimore home after complications of a stroke. He was 90.
Born to an Italian-American family and known as "Young Tommy," D'Alesandro had a political upbringing.
His father, Thomas D'Alesandro Jr., served in the US House of Representatives from 1939 to 1947 and as the mayor of Baltimore for 12 years after that. His sister, Nancy, became the first woman to serve as speaker of the House in 2007.
His mother Anunciata, who also went by Nancy, was an inventor who patented a device to apply steam to the face -- effectively an at home facial. She helped her husband in politics, supporting him as he became Baltimore's first Catholic mayor.
Pelosi, who just last week lost colleague and friend Maryland Democratic Rep. Elijah Cummings at age 68, also remembered her brother as someone dedicated to the family's hometown of Baltimore.
"His life and leadership were a tribute to the Catholic values with which we were raised: faith, family, patriotism. He profoundly believed, as did our parents, that public service was a noble calling and that we all had a responsibility to help others," she said.
Devout Catholics, Pelosi said her brother is now with the angels.
"All his life, Tommy worked on the side of the angels. Now, he is with them," she said.
D'Alesandro is survived by his wife Margaret, his children Thomas, Dominic, Nicholas, Patricia and Gregory, and his grandchildren "whom he adored," Pelosi said in the statement.
Baltimore Mayor Jack Young, a Democrat, expressed his condolences to Pelosi and the D'Alesandro family in a statement Sunday, saying the former mayor will be "remembered for his commitment to and love for" the city.
"He guided the city at a tumultuous time and made important strides while in office like creating summer recreation programs for youth, removing racial barriers in employment and education and laying the groundwork for what would become the world-famous Inner Harbor," Young said.

The Death Of Tony Rodham Is Announced - No Word On Where All The Haitian Gold Went
It was announced on Twitter by his sister, Hillary Clinton, that Tony Rodham has died.
There has yet to be a pronouncement of date, time, place and manner of death, but that is a family matter.
Perhaps, she is talking to him as we watch Bill, her husband, share with us of Hillary's ability to communicate with the dead, like Elenore Roosevelt, to figure out what to do with his Haitian gold mines and slave labor operations legacy.
Perhaps, the gold could be found and given back to the children of Haiti because you know the profits were laundered through some child welfare NGOs into children's trusts.

“When I first got involved, Tony was taking part in jaunts to China, and they would do presentations. Somebody in China did recruiting and found people who were interested and could qualify,” said former Gov. Kathleen Blanco (D-La.), who until December sat on the board of Rodham’s Gulf Coast Funds Management, a company criticized this week for using political pressure to try to speed up a federal agency’s approval of visas.
Blanco told POLITICO that while Rodham was listed as president and CEO, he appeared to have little day-to-day involvement in the firm. His principal role was recruiting investors for Gulf Coast’s main client, GreenTech Automotive, a start-up automotive company linked to Terry McAuliffe, now Virginia’s governor. Both Gulf Coast and GreenTech are owned by Virginia businessman Xiaolin Charles Wang, who brought on partners with deep Democratic Party political connections as he tried to get the business going.
Blanco said both she and former IRS Commissioner Margaret Richardson left Gulf Coast’s board in December. The ex-governor also said she believed the firm was no longer actively recruiting investors.
“I think the company fulfilled its mission. Our goal was to raise money that was supposed to be used to create jobs in Mississippi and Louisiana. That was our obligation,” Blanco said.
Rodham, who did not respond to messages and emails sent to the firms, has said nothing publicly about an inspector general report issued this week that offers a detailed account of pressure exerted on a Department of Homeland Security official to try to speed up review of visa requests. The report says that both Rodham and McAuliffe contacted U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services Director Alejandro Mayorkas for help and that agency employees believed the men were getting preferential treatment because of their political ties.
McAuliffe defended his actions Thursday on a radio talk show, saying the delays were inexplicable and his company needed answers.
Federal authorities have been examining the dealings of Rodham’s investment company for at least two years,beginning their inquiries months before McAuliffe launched a campaign for Virginia governor.
The Securities and Exchange Commission had an “ongoing … investigation” into Gulf Coast in 2013, according to documents released by Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa.) The records showed that the SEC subpoenaed records from a bank for Gulf Coast. GreenTech confirmed in September 2013 that it, too, received an SEC subpoena and said the firm was cooperating with the inquiry.
Gulf Coast’s only known investment is in GreenTech. Gulf Coast sought money from overseas investors through a federal government program that allowed wealthy foreigners to obtain green cards by investing in American businesses. Rodham’s investment company was part of a federal program that encourages foreign investors to front up $500,000 to fund American businesses, and to pay roughly $55,000 to obtain a U.S. green card.
In an SEC filing last year, GreenTech said it had raised $47 million in private equity investments of at least half a million dollars apiece and was looking to raise a total of $60 million. The filing did not say how much of the money came from foreign investors seeking U.S. residency through the so-called EB-5 visa program.
While Mayorkas said he’d not heard of McAuliffe before their interactions, fraud detection officials at USCIS were well aware of the political ties of Gulf Coast’s president and CEO, Rodham.
“The Principal Administrator is the brother to current secretary of state and former First Lady of the United States Hillary Rodham Clinton,” an unnamed USCIS official wrote in an internal memo that was released by Grassley and appears to date from after Clinton’s departure from the Cabinet in 2013.
Until recently, the address listed for Gulf Coast Funds on its website was for an eighth-floor suite in a Tyson’s Corner building right next to the Ritz Carlton. The suite — on the same floor as offices for Turkish Airlines and Condur Company LLC — is now completely empty. The building also houses several financial companies like Morgan Stanley, Wells Fargo and Charles Schwab & Co.?
Gulf Coast Funds is now based out of the same, small office suite as its sister company GreenTech Automotive in a neighboring building. The walls of the 11th-floor office are lined with pictures of GreenTech’s vehicles, but a sign in the reception area bearing the company’s name also lists “Gulf Coast Funds” below it. A receptionist in the building’s lobby said she knew that GreenTech’s offices were located on the 11th floor but was unaware that Gulf Coast Funds shared an office with the company.
Employees working in the office Thursday declined to answer a reporter’s questions or to provide their names and affiliations. They also said Wang was not in the office and was unavailable for an interview.
While Gulf Coast has a modest website, it lists only GreenTech as a client. A page on the site listing the firm’s “management team” appears to have been deleted in recent days.
GreenTech completed construction of a factory building in Tunica, Miss. last year. A news release on the firm’s website said production was to begin in November, but the facility is still getting up an running, according to a local official.
“Their employment in Tunica is approximately 80 employees and they are actively seeking more employees in skilled trades. The company continues to build their workforce, install equipment and test vehicles,” Lyn Arnold of the Tunica Chamber of Commerce said in an email Thursday.
Gulf Coast was founded in 2007 by David Voelker, a Republican businessman who donated to candidates of both parties, and George Brower, who hoped to stimulate business investments after Hurricane Katrina devastated the region. Voelker was the key force behind the project, Blanco said, but later sold the firm to Wang, a Virginia businessman.
“When Wang bought it, he thought it was a solid company,” Blanco said. McAuliffe and Rodham came aboard after Wang took over, the former governor said. McAuliffe’s goal was to bring part of GreenTech or another a manufacturing firm to rural Virginia, using the investor-visa financing. No such deal was ever cut.
Blanco said the company became controversial only in 2013, when McAuliffe began running for governor and cut his ties with both Gulf Coast and GreenTech. Suddenly, the political connections that seemed to be an asset for the business venture made it a target. That angered Wang, the former governor said.

“It looked to me like everyone was working and working in a legitimate way,” Blanco said. “When it got politicized, it got fractured. When Terry started running for governor, everything became intensely political, and Charlie became upset with the political piece of it.”
In 2013, GreenTech Automotive filed an $85 million libel lawsuit against a Virginia-based, self-styled watchdog group, the Franklin Center for Government & Public Integrity, which investigated the company and raised questions about its political connections and business prospects.
A federal judge in Mississippi dismissed the libel claims against the group and its writer last July. GreenTech’s appeal of that ruling is pending before a federal appeals court. GreenTech also refiled the libel suit in September in a state court in Alexandria, Virginia.
Mayorkas has adamantly denied any wrongdoing and described himself as “impervious” to political influence. However, in a response to Homeland Security investigators he described his dealings with McAuliffe as “difficult and unpleasant.” The former immigration official, who now serves as deputy secretary of homeland security, also said he received “caustic,” “inflammatory” and expletive-laden phone calls from McAuliffe, a charge the now-governor didn’t deny Thursday.
”I was angrier than heck at all these people,” McAuliffe told WRVA radio in Richmond on Thursday, noting that the calls came before he was elected in 2013. “Just as I do as governor. … I pick up the phone and I raise heck. I do what I think is right.”
Blanco said Thursday that she remembered people affiliated with Gulf Coast being mystified at the lack of action by immigration officials, but she didn’t recall what the firm’s management decided to do about it. She said she was disappointed by the flap but sympathetic to McAuliffe’s efforts to try to get federal officials to approve the firm’s applications.
“I don’t like anything I’m involved with to have anything negative said about it, but it was a very legal program,” the former governor added. “What are people supposed to do when they find a level of frustration with the bureaucracy?”

“The problem is there are millions of dollars coming into these entities from corporations and special interests with business before Elijah Cummings, and any time you have that, every rule has to be followed or else it opens the door for massive corruption,” Anderson previously told TheDCNF.
Multiple nonprofit experts are questioning why Rockeymoore Cummings’s private company charges a 5% management fee to her charity on top of a cost-sharing agreement.
Charity Watch President Daniel Borochoff said the funds flowing from Rockeymoore Cummings’s charity from the 5% management fee is problematic given her husband’s regulatory authority over the business interests funding her charity.
“That connection could be made,” Borochoff said. “All the more reason to get rid of that 5% arrangement.
“My advice to them: get rid of the percentage arrangement and pay the LLC for whatever work its performing, but also to do whatever it can to separate the for-profit from the nonprofit,” he added.
Sally Wagenmaker, a Chicago attorney who specializes in nonprofit tax law, said that while cost-sharing agreements between charities and other entities are common, the management fee Rockeymoore Cummings charges her charity “raises a potential red flag.”
“Given Rockeymoore’s involvement with both entities, there should be very robust documentation and practices showing that the Center’s charitable funds have been appropriately used for such ‘management’ fees paid to” the LLC, Wagenmaker told TheDCNF.
Scott Walter, the president of the conservative watchdog group Capital Research Center, added: “It’s a red flag for a powerful member like Elijah Cummings to have a family member receiving money from entities with issues before his powerful committee.”
Walter said the financial details of Rockeymoore Cummings’s charity and for-profit venture “raises lots of red flags that deserve investigation by the proper authorities, even though the full picture is unclear because of the complexity of the law and the incompleteness of the publicly disclosed information.”
Cummings pushed back against the NLPC’s IRS complaint against his wife’s companies in May, saying they were a “fabricated distraction” from an organization “funded by right-wing mega-donors known for their political hit jobs.”

Rockeymoore Cummings’s charity is funded by companies with interests before her husband’s congressional committee, according to the Washington Examiner.
“It’s self-dealing. It’s taking the charity’s resources and turning them into personal profits,” National Legal and Policy Center (NLPC) investigator Tom Anderson told The Daily Caller News Foundation. “IRS law doesn’t allow a charity for this purpose. This isn’t for the public interest, this is for her personal interest. You can’t do that.”
Cummings, a Maryland Democrat, listed his wife’s LLC on his most recent financial disclosure reports as an asset worth between $250,001 and $500,000.

Happy Colored History Month: Blackface Political Propaganda & The Virginia Blob - It Just Keeps Growing
The use of the Blackface goes back to England as a form of entertainment, known as the Minstrel Show, to convey political messages, which is nothing more than another milestone in the history of political propaganda.The Abolition Movement used the Minstrel Show as a way of showing parts of the country why it was a good thing to label and classify based upon stereotypes, to preserve the U.S. as a christian nation in its peculiar institution.

Report on DOJ’s Handling of Clinton Email Probe Nears Release
Multiple subjects of a report on the Justice Department’s handling of a 2016 investigation into Hillary Clinton’s email use have been notified that they can privately review the report by week’s end, signaling t he long-awaited document is nearing release.
The report is likely to reignite the volatile debate over the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s handling of the Clinton probe, and it will put Michael Horowitz, the Justice Department’s inspector general, in a familiar place—taking aim at members of the law enforcement community.
Those invited to review the report were told they would have to sign nondisclosure agreements in order to read it, people familiar with the matter said. They are expected to have a few days to craft a response to any criticism in the report, which will then be incorporated in the final version to be released in coming weeks.
Mr. Horowitz told lawmakers last month he expected to issue the report in May, but Tuesday’s notification is the first indication that Mr. Horowitz has largely completed his inquiry. Congressional committees are expected to review the report in coming weeks.
Mr. Horowitz’s office issued a related report last month, which laid the groundwork for the firing of former FBI Deputy Director Andrew McCabe, finding that he misled investigators probing his role in providing information to a reporter for The Wall Street Journal. Mr. McCabe disputed the allegations, which have been referred to the Washington U.S. attorney’s office to determine whether he should be charged with a crime.
The inspector general’s yearlong review is expected to yield sharp criticism of actions by several top officials, including former FBI Director James Comey’s announcement in July 2016 that Mrs. Clinton had been reckless with the nation’s secrets but he was recommending against prosecuting her.
The report is also expected to scrutinize whether Mr. McCabe should have recused himself from the Clinton investigation, since his wife’s campaign for the Virginia legislature was aided by then- Gov. Terry McAuliffe, a Clinton ally. And it is likely to criticize the numerous texts exchanged by two FBI employees critical of President Donald Trump and others.
Beyond that, the document’s release will shine an unusual spotlight on Mr. Horowitz, the Justice Department’s in-house watchdog since 2011.
Inspectors general, appointed by the president and confirmed by the Senate, don’t automatically change with administrations, a way of maintaining their independence. Their probes often involve interviews with dozens of witnesses and can produce reports months or even years after a problem comes to light.
In January 2017, Mr. Horowitz announced a review of Mr. Comey’s public statements on the Clinton investigation and related matters. Since then, officials have been bracing for his report, which has occasionally been in the news, such as when he released the related report on Mr. McCabe last month.
The McCabe report drew the ire of one of Mr. Horowitz’s predecessors, Michael Bromwich, an attorney who now represents Mr. McCabe and who said he had evidence that contradicted the initial report’s findings.
No stranger to antagonizing his colleagues, Mr. Horowitz spent several years as chief of the public-corruption unit in the Manhattan U.S. attorney’s office in the 1990s. In that role he helped prosecute more than a dozen police officers from New York’s 30th Precinct who were accused of stealing money and drugs from criminal suspects and reselling the drugs.
He authorized the arrest of the officers just as a colleague was planning to use them as witnesses in a major drug case.
“It not only involved proceeding against law enforcement, which is your day-to-day partner in fighting crime...it also had negative impacts on other cases in the office, and needed to be handled with skill, sensitivity and all those things Michael has,” said Mary Jo White, who was U.S. attorney and Mr. Horowitz’s boss at the time.
Mr. Horowitz also served as an official at Justice Department headquarters in Washington and spent a decade in private practice before being nominated by then-President Barack Obama to the inspector general post.
At his confirmation hearing, Mr. Horowitz cited the police corruption case and another prosecution involving the Teamsters that also disrupted colleagues’ work, saying they showed he could maintain his independence from people he had worked with for many years.
“I wasn’t interested in winning popularity contests as the head of the corruption unit,” he said. “I was instructed by the U.S. attorney to doggedly pursue corruption, to be independent of the other units in the office, and that’s precisely what I did.”
At that hearing, Sen. Chuck Grassley (R., Iowa) pressed Mr. Horowitz on whether he could be impartial toward the then-head of the Justice Department’s criminal division, Lanny Breuer, whom Mr. Horowitz had publicly supported. Mr. Horowitz said he would pursue “every avenue in that case, no matter who’s involved.”
Several months later, Mr. Horowitz’s office released a report on the botched “Fast and Furious” gun-trafficking operation, in which officials lost track of guns sold to suspected smugglers. The report faulted Mr. Breuer for not promptly informing superiors about a similar operation he had learned of in 2010.
Some Obama Justice Department officials criticized that report as applying simplistic hindsight to complex episodes during which the proper course of action wasn’t always clear.
Officials generally say they expect Mr. Horowitz to reach good faith conclusions in the coming report. “Horowitz is open-minded and fair,” said Matthew Miller, who ran the Justice Department’s public affairs office when the “Fast and Furious” operation first became public.

Profitable Investing In Foster Care & Age Out Before They Die
Before you delve into the latest Watergate2 video of the day, I am going to set up this as a conundrum wrapped in an enigma.
So, if there is a significant spike in the deaths of youth in the U.S. over the few years, and we know there is a direct link to poverty, opioids and child trafficking, then that would mean the current national policy climate ain't doin' too swell.
The acquisition of children in predictive modeling developed in parallel tangent with child welfare fraud schemes to fund political campaigns to elect public officials who are bereft of any economic acumen when it comes to the well being of anyone execpt themselves.
But the age out foster care population is ripe for the targeting, as witnessed in this Jim Casey Youth Opportunities Initiative 2013 Report, of which we know the benefactors want a profitable return on their social impact bond investments.
They are selling humans right under the noses of the public, and the neither has the FBI nor DOJ have done a damn thing about it.
It is time to end the propaganda and the fraud.

No one should ever have to experience such horrors in life, let alone a child, for the purposes of maximing revenue in Medicaid fraud and asset seizures, because when these youth die, guess who the beneficiaries are to the life insurance policies and trust funds?

Virginia has high percentage of youth aging out of foster care
Dominique Bryant became homeless when she was 17.
Now 23, Bryant was placed in foster care in New York immediately after she was born. She was adopted when she was 10 and moved to Charlottesville with her adoptive mother. But when Bryant was 17, the mother terminated her parental rights.
Bryant went to a foster family and then to a psychiatric clinic to be treated for depression. After that, she said, the foster family didn’t want to take her back.
“Because I was right on the cusp of 18, there weren’t many options for me,” Bryant said. “I was placed in a sobriety house, even though I wasn’t an alcoholic.”
Residency in the home was contingent on attending regular meetings. Bryant missed one, because she couldn’t get transportation. She lost her place and spent four months homeless in the Charlottesville area. The outcome that Bryant faced as a result of aging out of foster care without achieving permanency — being adopted or finding a permanent foster placement — is common.
According to the results of a national survey conducted by Child Trends for the Children’s Home Society of Virginia and Better Housing Coalition, 20 percent of the people who age out of foster care are homeless within two years. Twenty-five percent are incarcerated, 42 percent drop out of school and 71 percent of the women are pregnant by age 21.
The report estimates that if this population graduated from high school at the same rate as the general population, they would earn $1.8 billion more over their working lifetimes and contribute $430 million in additional taxes.
The results of the survey, released Nov. 14, also show that Virginia has one of the highest percentages of youth exiting foster care due to aging out — 20 percent compared to 9 percent nationally.
YOUNG AND HOMELESS
Meghann Cotter, executive director of Micah Ecumenical Ministries, a faith-based nonprofit that supports the Fredericksburg area’s homeless population, said she has seen the number of homeless youth increase in the 10 years she’s worked at Micah.
“When I started, the faces of those we were seeing were drastically older and sicker — more what you think of when you think of ‘homeless on the street,’ ” she said. “But in the last three or four years, the faces have become drastically younger.”
Between July 1, 2015, and July 1, 2016, the homeless services system in Planning District 16, which includes Fredericksburg and Stafford, Spotsylvania, Caroline and King George counties, served 162 clients between the ages of 18 and 24 — 12 percent of the total population served.
“They bounce around with friends or whatever, and they’re OK for a while,” she said.
But she said research shows that 85 percent of former foster-care youth have experienced some kind of trauma.
“So not only are they lacking the life skills that all 18-year-olds lack, but they’re also dealing with a lessened amount of coping skills as a result of trauma experience, and they have no social support system to wrestle with that,” Cotter said.
Though 18 is the age of legal adulthood, research quoted in the CHS report shows that the brain continues to develop through age 25. Today’s young people tend to rely on their parents for emotional and financial support well into their 20s. When kids don’t have a built-in support system, bridging the gap between adolescence and adulthood is that much harder.
“For a lot of kids, the first year of college is tough,” said Gail Crooks, director of the Spotsylvania Department of Social Services. “But you bounce back to mom and dad. When you don’t have a safe place where you can go to come back from tough spots, they just have a cumulative effect.”
In 2016, 464 foster-care youth aged out of the system in Virginia. Those figures have the potential to grow, as the number of children in foster care nationally grew by 8 percent between 2011 and 2015, possibly due to the opioid epidemic — which was declared a national public health emergency in October.
Bruin Richardson, chief advancement officer at Children’s Home Society, said there are a number of reasons why Virginia has higher numbers of youth leaving foster care without being adopted.
“One is that we’re a county-administered system, and that creates some barriers that make it more difficult to get kids adopted,” he said in a phone interview. “Also, kids tend to be older when they come into the system in Virginia than the national average. What that results in is they may have more significant trauma and then they really are teenagers before they become eligible to be adopted.

In 2014, the proportion of older children — ages 16 to 20 — in Virginia’s foster care system was larger than it was for the nation as a whole, the CHS report shows.
Crooks said that, anecdotally, kids tend to be 10 or 11 years old when they come into foster care in Spotsylvania.
“In Virginia, we try very hard to maintain children in their home,” she said. “We try to support the family to stabilize it. So when we do come in, we’ve exhausted a whole lot of options, and kids are coming in with higher levels of need.”
“We try to prepare our kids, because we know there might be challenges to permanency,” she added.
EXTENDING HELP
Virginia is one of 36 states that elected to extend foster care services beyond the age of 18. Last year, the state introduced a new program, Fostering Futures, which went into effect July 1, 2016, for people who turned 18 on or after that date. It uses federal Title IV-E funds to extend care past the age of 18, so youth in successful foster home placements can stay there. They can stay in contact with their case managers or receive stipends for rent and groceries.
However, Fostering Futures is an opt-in program, and young people often don’t choose to opt in, leaving the system before the mandated cut-off age.
Richardson said this was one of the most surprising findings of the CHS report.
“Maybe it shouldn’t have been a surprise to us, but even in states where there are programs for youth through the age of 21, in the vast majority of those states, the majority of youth are opting out of those programs at 18 or 19,” he said. “And that was eye-opening.”
Crooks said that many kids who have been in the foster care system for years choose emancipation as soon as they are able because they just don’t want to be connected to social services anymore.
“Sometimes, all they want is distance,” she said.
She thinks it would help those kids to hear from their peers.
“They need to hear from someone else the value of it,” she said. “They need someone to help them see down the road and see how staying associated with us can help them get to their tomorrow.”
Crooks said she would love to set up a body of mentors from the local community to act as cool, caring aunts or uncles to older foster care kids.
“It would be like Big Brothers/Big Sisters, for anyone who wants to sign up to be a mentor or who has something these kids respect,” she said. “Like the mom of your best friend that you can talk to when you can’t talk to your mom.”
Another way to fight the problem of youth aging out of foster care is to find more families willing to foster or adopt teenagers, and adequately supporting those who do.
Cotter said she’s seen kids at Micah’s cold-weather homeless shelter who were dropped there by their adoptive parents.
“The parents are just done, for whatever reason,” she said.
Crooks said it is very difficult to place teenagers in adoptive homes, especially when the teens have years of traumatic experiences behind them.
“So that’s building block number one — beefing up resources for families willing to take older kids,” she said.
Richardson said another crucial step is improving access to affordable housing.
“It’s very difficult to take advantage of those programs that may exist if you’re trying to figure out where your next meal is coming from and whether you will have a roof over your head tomorrow night,” he said. “These are young people who have almost uniformly been victims of trauma. They’re already in survival mode, and then when we don’t do things that will help provide housing, they lack the stability to get beyond that.”
TAPPING POTENTIAL
Taylor Landrie, director of the Great Expectations program at Germanna Community College — a statewide, grant-funded program that helps current and former foster youth transition into college — said supporting former foster care kids can be as simple as giving them lots of pep talks.
“These kids are just the most resilient, intelligent, tough individuals I’ve ever met,” Landrie said. “They have this huge amount of potential to be incredibly successful. They already have the life skills, they already have the grit and tenacity that they need to be successful in college, but in some cases, no one has ever told them that they’re smart or ever told them they were college material or that they can do anything they want to.
“When we support these students, they’re able to reach their own academic goals and support themselves and their families,” she continued.
Tiffani Beissel, 21, is one student who benefited from Great Expectations. She was placed in foster care at age 14 in her birth state of Missouri, and though she was adopted by a friend’s family when she was 15, that situation didn’t work out, she said. She moved in with a boyfriend, but he was abusive, and she moved to Virginia to get away from him.
“There have been so many times when I wanted to give up,” Beissel said. “When you don’t have anybody to love or care for you, it’s easy to just give up.”
But Beissel knew the statistics about former foster youth and didn’t want to become one of them. She said her resilience saw her through. She now lives with her aunt and uncle in Caroline County and will graduate from Germanna in May with an associate degree and a specialization in psychology.
Bryant also has benefited from Great Expectations. She’s now pursuing an associate degree in early childhood education and has found a stable home in Locust Grove with a member of her church.
CHS has put together a task force made up of experts in affordable housing, foster care, child welfare and education, as well as Virginia delegates and senators and aged-out foster youth, to make policy recommendations for improving access and services to youth aging out of foster care.
The task force aims to complete its work in mid-2018.

Conyers Commends VA Governor McAuliffe on Restoration of Ex-Offender Voting Rights
Washington, D.C. – Today, Gov. Terry McAuliffe announced that he used his executive authority to restore the voting rights of more than 200,000 ex-offenders. As a result, ex-offenders in Virginia who are not in prison, on probation or parole will be permitted to register and vote in the upcoming presidential election. House Judiciary Committee Ranking Member John Conyers, Jr. (D-MI), commended his actions with the following statement:

Conyers observed that, “The challenge we face today is not ballot integrity, but the need to expand opportunities around the franchise, so that voting is fairly and equally open to all Americans. Far too many have been denied the right to vote, even long years after paying their debt to society. Disenfranchisement laws isolate and alienate ex-offenders, and have been shown to serve as one more obstacle in their attempt to successfully reintegrate into society. I hope that the example of Virginia starts a trend for the remaining states in the nation that still have barriers to ex-offender voting.”
Ranking Member Conyers is a long-standing champion of the Democracy Restoration Act of 2015 (H.R. 1459), which was re-introduced this Congress. This legislation would create uniform federal standards for returning the voting rights of ex-offenders to vote in federal elections.
