Michigan education Silent Variables Take The Stage, Again

What should be more of interest are the educational results of children who are under the care of the State of Michigan, more intuitively recognized as foster children.

Because foster care records, including the educational records are kept hidden from public scrutiny under privacy laws, there is no measurement of the reading levels.  Michigan is failing another population of children, foster kids and kids in the juvenile system.

Legally, the State of Michigan is the parent for almost 20,000 children.  As logic would present itself, it would be the state to blame for failing to provide for the necessary needs of the child.  This is the legal definition of child neglect.

If Michigan cannot care for the children it is legally responsible for, what makes anyone believe it can provide education for someone else.  The failure rates of education for Highland Park school children is but a small indicator of a greater problem.

The following link will take you a previous posting on the problems with education in Michigan:

ACLU sues state, EM for failing to teach Highland Park schoolchildren to read

The American Civil Liberties Union of Michigan filed a class-action lawsuit this morning asserting a child's fundamental right to read.

The lawsuit alleges that agencies charged with overseeing Highland Park Schools failed to take the effective steps to ensure students are reading at grade level as set forth by state law.
