Detroit corporation counsel Melvin Hollowell to leave city post for law firm position

After serving four years as the city of Detroit's corporation counsel, Melvin "Butch Hollowell" is leaving his position to become managing partner with a nationally recognized law firm, the city announced Wednesday.

“While I will miss my colleagues at City Hall, I am looking forward to the opportunity of joining The Miller Law Firm as Managing Partner of its new Detroit office in January, 2018,”  Hollowell said in a news release.

Hollowell will work for The Miller Law Firm, which is known nationally for commercial litigation and consumer protection, according to a news release from the city.

"Under Butch Hollowell’s leadership, not only has the city saved millions of dollars in lawsuit settlements that can be used for critical city services, his vigorous efforts to address the issues of commercial blight, illegal graffiti and illegal dumping have greatly improved the quality of life in Detroit’s neighborhoods,” Mayor Mike Duggan said in the news release.

As managing partner, Hollowell will launch the Detroit office with the aim of expanding the firm’s significant national presence and building a strong base of talented attorneys in the City of Detroit.

As for a replacement, Duggan will announce his nominee in the coming days and formally submit his nomination for consideration and confirmation of Detroit City Council within the next 30 days, the news release said. Council is expected to schedule a confirmation hearing when it goes back into session at the beginning of next year.

Prior to working for the city, Hollowell had served as co-chair of the State Democratic Party, treasurer for then-Attorney General Jennifer Granholm's gubernatorial campaign, and as a deputy Wayne County Executive during the Edward McNamara administration. He also ran unsuccessfully for Michigan Secretary of State in 2002.

And again, the moral of the story is, "Do not be mean to my Sweetie. Period."

Stay tuned.
