CONYERS and REED Share Personal Stories Of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

It took me as a surprise that these stories on the assassination  of Dr. Martin Luther King have never been made public.

What was even more stunning was that I have observed on social media, individuals and groups who have transmogrified his message into one of personal vexation for their own political beliefs and financial gains.

There is so much history intentionally excluded from the annals of history and our classrooms that it becomes disheartening.

Zenus Avila Reed, "Z" as he is commonly known in Detroit, tells the story of when he was about 10 years of age, working at the Lorraine Motel the day before Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. was shot. Some garbage workers had taken shelter in the garbage truck when it began to rain. Segregation laws did not allow them to come inside. Some men found this to be funny and pushed the lever on the garbage truck, crushing the men. Dr. King came down to protest on the conditions and treatment of garbage workers.

Here is John Conyers, Jr. speaking, Dean of the Congressional Black Caucus, sharing a personal story of his friend he told for the CBC Institute Class in D.C. in 2011.
