My Letter to Hamtramck Councilman Abu Musa: Understanding a Democratic Government

UPDATE:  I never received a response.  Probably because I am a woman.

This is a copy of an email I sent today to City of Hamtramck Councilperson Abu Musa.

Councilman Abu Musa,

City of Hamtramck
Councilman Abu Musa,
It is with the greatest disappointment that I reach out to you concerning a deeply repugnant statement to democratic philosophy at the January 13, 2015 City of Hamtramck City Council Meeting.

Paraphrased in part, you made the following statement"

"Madame Mayor, I want to thank you for allowing me to serve you for the last year..."

To begin, you serve at the pleasure of the people, not the Mayor.  This is why there are election laws.

The governing body of the City is not a monarchy nor is your title as Councilman a title of nobility.

Your role as an elected official is to deliberate issues in debate, for the greater good of the people.  Hamtramck representation is not designated to be by district, but at-large which means you have a duty to represent all constituents.  The construct of government is specifically designed as a participatory democracy, not just an opportunity for you to promote your self-interests.

I would be remiss not to mention your utter indolence in understanding the purpose and meaning of your oath of office.  It would behoove you to take the time and learn about a tripartite governance, specifically checks and balances.

During your run for City Council you candidly stated that you did not reside within the City and wanted to learn about its people.  It was to your advantage that the City still, to this day, neither has a functioning Elections Board, with open meetings, published announcements, published minutes, nor annual reports, for the people to become educated in the democratic process for the purposes of: becoming a candidate; running for office; challenging a candidate; or, the process of election, which is an egregious transgression of due process.  I strongly encourage you to take initiative and animate the aforementioned body.

I will even go so far to question the source and national origin of your campaign committee financing.

Your actions have demonstrated that you are in desperate need of guidance regarding matters of the City; therefore, I strongly encourage you to reach out for advice and direction from legal counsel.

Quintessentially, you owe the residents of the City of Hamtramck, including the State of Michigan as the City is still under its auspices, a timely, public apology for your improper utterance and unethical actions, otherwise, it would be in the best interests of the people for you to resign, immediately, for reasons withheld at this time.

I look forward to your response and shall publish, accordingly, for the people to participate in an open forum to debate on your fitness of office.

Anyone is free to leave a comment.  I will assure all comments are forwarded to Councilman Musa.
