Jackson County, Michigan Foster Care Review Board is looking for volunteers

As the old adage goes: "If you can't beat them; join them."

Instead of pitch forks and torches, why not sit at the table and be a participant in developing policy and improving operations.

Besides, what a great way to have fun when the Foster Care Review Board is staring you dead in your eyes from the same side of the table.

I encourage everyone to submit an application and go for interview.  In the history of the Board, there has never been a sitting member who has gone through the foster care system.  If I am incorrect, please correct.

Jackson County Foster Care Review Board is looking for volunteers

Volunteers are needed to serve on the Jackson County Foster Care Review Board. The Michigan Foster Care Review Board Program consists of 27 local boards throughout the state. Local boards meet one day a month to review cases of children who have been removed from their home and placed in foster care due to abuse or neglect. The purpose of the review is to support the local courts and child placing agencies in their efforts to ensure the safety and well being of the children while they are in foster care, and to facilitate a plan for them to return to a safe, stable, and permanent family as soon as possible.
Applicants must be 18 years of age, have a high school diploma, good reading skills, and a passion to serve the community's most vulnerable children and families. Prohibited from serving on the Foster Care Review Board are employees of the Department of Human Services
(this is a big fat lie.  Bill Johnson, Superintendent of Michigan Childrens' Institute is the final decision maker in adoption placements) , family courts, or private child placement agencies.
Additional information and Foster Care Review Board membership application packets are available by calling (313) 972-3280, or online at http://courts.mi.gov/Administration/SCAO/OfficesPrograms/fcrbp.
The deadline for applications is Jan. 24, 2014.
