(WASHINGTON) – Today, Congressman John Conyers, Jr. (D-Mich.), along with other Members of the House Democratic Caucus, participated in a Democratic Issues Conference in Leesburg, Virginia which included addresses by President Obama and Vice President Biden. At this conference, the Gun Violence Prevention Task Force, created by House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) and chaired by Congressman Mike Thompson (D-Calif.), released a gun safety plan entitled, “It’s Time To Act: A Comprehensive Plan That Reduces Gun Violence and Respects the 2nd Amendment Rights of Law-Abiding Americans.” Following the release of this plan, Rep. Conyers issued the following statement:

“The diligent work of the task force shows that Members from varied perspectives can come together to agree on principles that will make our country safer. We must take the steps recommended in this report, without delay. The recommendations developed by the Task Force are consistent with my priorities for reducing gun violence in America. These priorities include: requiring background checks for all gun sales, banning the future sale of military-style assault weapons and high-capacity ammunition magazines, employing prevention strategies—particularly when it comes to young people in this country—and increasing access to critical mental health services.
“Yesterday, I signed on as a cosponsor to H.R. 452, the ‘Gun Trafficking Prevention Act of 2013,’ a bipartisan bill that helps law enforcement and prosecutors reduce the flow of illegal guns to our streets, and which will address a problem highlighted in this report.
“Today President Obama again urged Congress to take action to end the senseless tragedies arising from gun violence. Last evening, Vice President Biden declared that after the horrors of the last several years ‘enough is enough.’ The task force has heeded these calls and presented a framework on which Congress should take immediate action.”
