FBI executes search warrants in health-care fraud probe in Detroit

Detroit— Federal agents executed search warrants early Thursday in two suites inside the New Center One building near the city's Midtown area as part of a $31 million health-care fraud investigation.

The raid involves two businesses being investigated by the FBI and a health-care fraud taskforce led by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, Office of Inspector General.

One of the office suites belongs to a company called Hands-On Healing Home Care Inc. The company's owner, Zafar Mehmood, was charged Thursday in federal court with health-care fraud, according to a criminal complaint.

Mehmood owned and operated several home health agencies and paid kickbacks to obtain Medicare beneficiary information, according to the complaint. He allegedly billed Medicare for services that were medically unnecessary and never performed.

Mehmood also is accused of laundering proceeds from the scheme through several companies owned by co-conspirators, according to the complaint.

The money laundering allegedly involved Mehmood taking cash on trips to Pakistan, according to an affidavit signed by Special Agent Steven Warren of the Inspector General's office.

FBI Special Agent Sandra R. Berchtold declined to release additional details, noting the affidavits are sealed.

The warrants were executed by the FBI and the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Office of the Inspector General.
