Commentary: Anti-gay blogger is out of control
The creepy blogger from the state Attorney General's Office has had strange bedfellows before, so maybe we shouldn't be surprised that he's so interested in the social life of a University of Michigan student.
Andrew Shirvell, 30, embarked on a hasty leave of absence last week after his harassment of Chris Armstrong became national news. He managed to sneak largely under the radar, though, when he essentially aligned himself with the loons from Westboro Baptist Church a few months earlier.
Westboro and its pastor, Fred Phelps, have become notorious for picketing the funerals of fallen U.S. armed service members, holding aloft signs with pithy sayings like "God Hates Fags." Their theory is that God smites down soldiers as retribution for the United States' stubborn refusal to persecute, ban, or otherwise vex gay people.
Here is my theory: This country needs to re-invest in its social infrastructure.
In May, Shirvell showed up at an anti-Phelps rally at U-M holding aloft a poster attacking Armstrong. His presence didn't draw much attention from the daily press, and for that matter, neither did the rally. But PrideSource.com and some similar online publications took note and even published a photo of Shirvell, standing next to a man whose much more artistic poster said only, "LOVE."

Would you want him prosecuting a case against you???
(A) General Principles. The license to practice law in Michigan is, among other
things, a continuing proclamation by the Supreme Court that the holder is fit to be
entrusted with professional and judicial matters and to aid in the administration of
justice as an attorney and counselor and as an officer of the court. It is the duty of
every attorney to conduct himself or herself at all times in conformity with
standards imposed on members of the bar as a condition of the privilege to practice
law. These standards include, but are not limited to, the rules of professional
responsibility and the rules of judicial conduct that are adopted by the Supreme
Court.
Preamble: A Lawyer's Responsibilities
As a public citizen, a lawyer should seek improvement of the law, the
administration of justice and the quality of service rendered by the legal profession.
As a member of a learned profession, a lawyer should cultivate knowledge of the
law beyond its use for clients, employ that knowledge in reform of the law and work
to strengthen legal education. A lawyer should be mindful of deficiencies in the
administration of justice and of the fact that the poor, and sometimes persons who
are not poor, cannot afford adequate legal assistance, and should therefore devote
professional time and civic influence in their behalf. A lawyer should aid the legal
profession in pursuing these objectives and should help the bar regulate itself in the
public interest. ... more
