FBI: Public corruption task force launching in Metro Detroit
Detroit— The FBI said Thursday it is joining forces with other federal, state and local investigators to uncover public corruption in the target-rich Metro Detroit area.
The creation of a public corruption task force is a response to several scandals in Detroit City Hall and schools, Wayne County government, Pontiac, Highland Park, Royal Oak Township and Ecorse in recent years.
The task force will include investigators from the U.S. Attorney's office, Internal Revenue Service, state Attorney General, and the Detroit and Michigan State Police departments, among others.
FBI Special Agent in Charge Andrew Arena called public corruption the office's highest criminal priority.
"Public servants are entrusted by all of us to act in the best interests of society," Arena said in a prepared statement. "Those who betray that trust must be brought to justice and such actions cannot be tolerated. This task force will leverage the best assets of the partners to better focus on the problem."
The FBI has created similar task forces in Georgia, Jacksonville, Fla., and elsewhere.
The task force announcement comes two days after former Detroit Treasurer Jeff Beasley was named in a six-count extortion indictment related to the city's pension funds.
